Sheffield

British weather rules the 400 drama....

Posted by simon on 7/15/2007 on simon's blog

It's cold, it's wet in Sheffield in the north of England, and nothing worked as planned....

world and Olympic 400-metre champion Jeremy Wariner stumbled at the start and, instead of keeping going, just stopped. Weird. Meanwhile Oscar "Blade Runner" Pistorius, the South African double amputee who is trying to convince international athletics authorities to let him compete at the Olympics, clattered round in the outside lane and finished last of the field in 47:65, two seconds behind winner Angelo Taylor.

Brilliant Bekele thrashes Mottram

Posted by simon on 7/15/2007 on simon's blog

Let's hear it for British tv, which is letting me watch live athletics while recovering from this morning's 10k (report later).

I've just seen a stunning 3k by Kenenisa Bekele, who thrashed Craig Mottram while running the fastest 3k ever recorded in Britain, the seventh fastest ever run in the world - in 7:26.11. For some perspective, he did the second 1500 in 3:40, which is a sub-4 minute mile, and was sticking in 400-metre laps of 57 and 58 seconds. Yikes!

"BladeRunner" Oscar Postorius is now at the start line for the 400m. It is POURING with rain.
