Don't try this at home: my super-recipe for geting rid of colds and flu

Posted by simon on 2/8/2008 on simon's blog

Not intended as medical advice, this is just what I do... bearing in mind that I trained in nutritional therapy and herbal medicine in the UK and have kitchen cupboards that hold more bottles of nutritional supplements and herbal remedies than they do food...

with that said, here's the list of stuff I do and take that usually sees off colds and flus quite quickly; in this case a highly successful 3-4 days instead of the 2-3 weeks that seems to be the norm for the latest Colorado virus.

Newby Runner - well, walker but working on the running thing

Posted by njladybug on 1/22/2008 on njladybug's blog

Below are entries from my blog on facebook. I wanted to post here too in case there is anyone who might get something from them or anyone who can offer support or just in case someone wants to comment. I am new to running and have decided to try it out. My husband and I train together and most of the time we walk because that is the fitness level that I am at. But I'm getting better and hopefully will be running soon. We are training for a 8k run in June. Here are some previous blogs (I'm also new to blogging):

What to do about low iron

Posted by simon on 6/22/2007 on simon's blog

It seems that American hero Alan Culpepper is another of the illustrious names (ahem) who has been bothered by a lack of iron in the blood.

The latest Running Times has a good story on this unsuspected scourge of distance athletes.. read it here.

One thing I disagree with. RT's Richard Lovett writes: "Treatment is fairly simple". Hmm. One runner in the article apparently solved it by eating steak; Culpepper took supplementa and six weeks later was OK. Not my experience :)

Best pre-race food?

http://www.yourrunning.com/forum-best_pre_race_food#comment-4501

Q: I've got a pre-race food question. I'm not sure what, how much, or when to eat before a race. With races usually occurring the first thing in the morning - what is the best food to eat? What ingredients should I be looking for - which digest easy or provide the most prolonged energy? Also, when should it be eaten - how long before the race?

Q & A: Can sports drinks cause stomach cramping?

Posted by Structure8998 on 3/7/2007 on Structure8998's blog

A study from the Netherlands shows that sugar in sports drinks slows absorption and increases stomach cramping in running races shorter than 12 miles.

Fluids pass through your stomach and are absorbed almost immediately in your intestines. Exercise slows fluid passage from the stomach but does not affect intestinal absorption. Sugar added to drinks can [...]

Win 100 of ANYTHING Powerbar!!!!!

Posted by baselbutt on 3/3/2007 on baselbutt's blog | Groups: North Pole Marathon

Hey everyone! Just a reminder that one lucky winner (as determined by YOU) will win 100 of ANYTHING Powerbar. Entry is free to Registered members of the YourRunning community!

To enter, simply submit what you think would be the BEST use for Powerbar products at the North Pole. I will select the five ideas I feel truly represent "outside the box thinking" and from there, you will all select the winning idea.

Keep in mind that Powerbars will be practically inedible at the North Pole (imagine chewing on a piece of hardened steel) - No idea is too crazy, but please keep the number of Powerbars required to do your idea down to less than 25 or so.

Pre race? Post race???

While flipping through a recent issue of Runner’s World, I came across an article about the “Best Grocery List of All Time!”. I had to laugh because, first off, how is it even possible to know that – and second, it wasn’t MY grocery list, so how could theirs be the best??

Looking through their list, I was amazed to see such controversial items as “eggs” – “oranges” – “whole wheat bread”… and the kicker – “PASTA”… What are we in? Kindergarten?

Since runners are known to be a little particular when it comes to nutrition, please do share the most unique thing on your shopping list – I’ll go first…

Win 100 of ANYTHING Powerbar...

Posted by baselbutt on 2/24/2007 on baselbutt's blog | Groups: North Pole Marathon

Nothing says happiness like a cupboard full of Powerbars - The feeling of being "SET" for 100 straight days with bars, gels, and/or drink mix is something we should all be lucky enough to experience once (or twice) in our lives.

One lucky member of the YourRUNNING community is going to walk away with this DREAM COME TRUE in return for coming up with most creative thing for me to do with any Powerbar Product at the North Pole. I'm looking for true OUTSIDE OF THE BOX thinking here. Let's find other uses for Powerbars/Gels BESIDES fueling the body.
