Latest thing in low-impact shoes: Nike launches "Lunar" in time for the OIympics

Posted by simon on 4/14/2008 on simon's blog

Nike have got some great new running shoes coming out at Olympics time. This heads-up is courtesy of Dwight Cornwell of Gap Coaching, who just bagged second in his age group at the Carslbad 5000: 18:45 at 61.

I caught up with Dwight after our Saturday high-altitude run on Magnolia Road; he was absolutely flying, while I staggered through the first 6 miles at barely above jogging pace, then enjoyed the benefits of the downhill-trending last 6 after my turn-around.

At last! Shoes made for forefoot runners!

New Distance Racer from Newton.

Part of the problem with the latest crop of aches and pains (see my previous blog about 100 mile weeks) is that I need new shoes.

Not only are most of mine (I rotate them like crazy) getting worn, but my strength and flexibility has been steadily improving over the last six months and as a result my body is dealing with ground contact in new ways.

I'm a forefoot striker, which has always made foot choice difficult. An inflexible, high-arch type to boot. And I supinate, rather than pronate. Lately I've started noticing I am landing even MORE on the edge of my right foot than ever, while the new strength in my feet and ankles seems to be making the left foot land "differently" -- to the extent that I'm getting Achilles soreness.

Nike Free Trail 5.0

God bless outlet stores!

Thanks to a big Nike factory outlet, I have two new additions to my shoe rack -- two new pairs of running shoes for the price of one.

First up, the answer to a prayer, the trail version of Nike Frees.
I've been missing being able to run in Frees in the snow, ice and mud we've had lately, as the "regular" Frees rely on friction for grip.

The Nike Free 5.0 Trail shoes have a combination of studs and waffle, plus a really cool arrangement of backward-facing mini-waffles right up front to allow you to toe-off without slipping.

I'm surprised that even with the new sole, and the fact they are following the new, slightly more substantial build of the 4.0, they only come out at 2oz heavier than a pair of original 3.0 Frees.
