IV Iron vs. Iron Shots

http://www.yourrunning.com/blog-a_shot_in_the_arm_is_worth_four_in_the_b...

So...back to Doc Fran at the urging of coach Bobby for a course of iron shots. "Ask her about getting intravenous iron" said Bobby, "we'll have to consider it if things don't pick up soon." He's as frustrated and surprised as I am that I'm cranking out 80-second 400-metre repeats with all the sound and fury of someone doing 74s. My heart rate stays low; my lungs just can't get enough oxygen. I gasp, pant, heave -- afd feel like I'm jogging.

Altitude adjustment before a race

http://www.yourrunning.com/forum-altitude_adjustment

Q: Any specific suggestions for preparing for a marathon at a higher altitude than one is used to? I live, train, and run about 35 miles a week at sea level, and will be participating in the 2007 Colorado Colfax Marathon. The air in Denver is, of course, much thinner than here. I'll arrive in Denver three or four days before the race. Generally speaking, is that enough time to acclimate? Anything else I can do in advance to prep? Thanks!

Cancel everything: I'm taking up knitting

I've never stepped off the track in the middle of a workout before, unless I've been injured.

Today it just seemed pointless to continue. I hadn't run in earnest for a week and was looking forward to letting rip on the track, with Bobby putting me and Kyle through an extensive warm-up, then a 1200m tt, 45 seconds rest then 400m. To finish us off, he had lined up 5 x 200m. Well, that was the plan...

First I was late. Despite 4 emails telling us it was 10am, I got it in my head it was 11am. So.. something going on there for starters. I warmed up OK. Strides were fine. First lap of the 1200 was good -- comfortable at 76 seconds -- then...I got slower and slower and my breathing more and more laboured. I fought through the second lap, then got even slower. With 150m to go I had to stop. It just wasn't happening. I couldn't breathe.
