What to wear when it's negative 10 out

Testing out the marathon-wear, including Kahtoola snow travel system on my feet, outside the Radisson SAS Polar Hotel in Longyearbyen on 4/4/2007.

Death by Showshoe

Here I am at the Piedmont High School track about an hour ago.. I ran about 2 miles on the track, then another 2 in the snowshoes on the astro-turf field.

Is there Astro Turf at the North Pole????

According to the experts (me), Astro Turf is the perfect Arctic training surface

It's funny to watch people's reaction to something taken completely out of context. Case in point - my brand new Kahtoola Flight snowshoe system arrived yesterday to the delight of my kids. I'm darn lucky I had them shipped to work; otherwise they'd have had a go at them before I did (much to the dismay of our hardwood floors - and my wife).

I clomped around my office in one (slipped over my dress shoe) for a few minutes, but decided against putting the other one on just in case my boss (or anyone else) should walk in - why I figured I could explain away having one snow shoe on but not two is beyond me..

TICK TOCK - tick tock

One lucky member of the YourRUNNING.com(munity) will walk away w

I was in my office today doing some work, when I glanced up at the big calendar on my wall and was struck by how few days I have left before I leave for Norway. They say time flies when you're having fun, so I must be having the time of my life! After a mild panic attack, I calmly pulled out a pad of paper and planned out the 28 days I have left over a cup of Corn Chowder at lunch.

28 days = 4 weeks = 4 weekends. One of those weekends is fast approaching and happens to include my wife's birthday (March 11th). The following weekend I'm heading to Death Valley to cycle the Badwater 135 course both out and back with a couple of friends (an event we dubbed the Badwater 235). The weekend after that will (have to) be a solid training weekend and the weekend after that is two days before I leave. Luckily, my running base is fairly solid and my body has been responding well to the long efforts I've put myself through. I should say they've been both long and solid. It's one thing to jog through 17 miles, but being able to log 17 miles in your little book and know you pushed the pace the entire time really boosts the old confidence level up a few notches. The big runs left are a 20 miler this Saturday (before heading off to help set up at my son's school's silent auction) and then a 22 miler the weekend of the 24th. That one will be slow and steady for sure. Since I'm sure me rambling about all the long runs I plan to do over the next four weeks is quite riveting, I'll do everyone a favor and stop talking about it.
