Don't try this at home: my super-recipe for geting rid of colds and flu

Posted by simon on 2/8/2008 on simon's blog

Not intended as medical advice, this is just what I do... bearing in mind that I trained in nutritional therapy and herbal medicine in the UK and have kitchen cupboards that hold more bottles of nutritional supplements and herbal remedies than they do food...

with that said, here's the list of stuff I do and take that usually sees off colds and flus quite quickly; in this case a highly successful 3-4 days instead of the 2-3 weeks that seems to be the norm for the latest Colorado virus.

Train or not train: what do you do when you've got a cold?

Posted by simon on 2/7/2008 on simon's blog

I'm feeling like a real whimp. I hit a mighty 40 miles a week and then fell over with a cold.

Extenuating circumstances: Abby has been battling with this flu thing that's going round. For the last three weeks she's progressed through stuffed nose and sinuses with a sore throat, to a cough and perpetual running nose, then to being totally wiped out and then experiencing a lovely final stage of nausea and vertigo. I took all my supplements like a good boy and didn't get it... until I woke up on Monday with the beginnings of it.

Effects of running in the cold

http://www.yourrunning.com/forum-running_in_the_cold#comment-1099

Q: Hi Simon, I was wondering - why when I go running when it's very cold the back of my head hurts during and after my run?

Simon says:
Are you doing something weird with your neck?

That would be my first thought. Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and am not giving medical advice.

Hot enough for you in the Sahara?

The Story

Sean Cornwell and Ed Stumpf were among the runners at the 2007 North Pole Marathon. Perhaps taking a cue from Bobby Bostic (now a veteran of not only the North Pole Marathon but also the Death Valley Ultramarathon), the duo also ran the Sahara Marathon earlier this year. This short video documents the run. I wonder what was more brutal? ... I'm guessing the Sahara race. Sean, who is a senior product marketing manager at Google, also blogged about the 2 races on the Official Google Blog.

Another lap please!

The great thing about a multi-loop marathon is that you get to see everyone at least once..

Just before the start of the North Pole Marathon on April 7th. I'm crouched next to the woman in Red (she's racer #26, I'm #27...)..
