How do I plan on running 100 miles?

Posted by Jetfuelburner on 4/24/2007 on Jetfuelburner's blog

My neighbor recently asked me in an email what I was expecting to do at the Burning River 100 mile race, and some of my strategy. He is an avid marathoner who regularly breaks 3 hours, and has been a huge supporter of mine as I started running again last year after about 14 years away. Below is what I typed back in response as far as my race plan, etc ....

Well, for the BR100, I am really just trying to focus on the idea of finishing. I won't lie and say that I have considered that if I can average 4.16 miles per hour, I could do it in 24 hours....that means I would have to maintain a 14:24 pace throughout, INCLUDING any time spent at aid stations. I do know that over the first 18 miles this would not be hard at all to do, as the terrain is very flat...but as the hills start building to the south, and the fatigue is setting in, I don't imagine I can keep that for 24 hours...I want to finish, first and foremost.

Stream Crossing on the BR100 course

Stream Crossing on the BR100 course

About 14 miles into the Burning River 100 course....this is the widest stream crossing in the first 18 miles...I think stream crossings are one of my favorite parts of trail running! Makes me feel like a little kid just charging through..

Burning River fam. run

Burning River Familiarization Run, and then some

Kurt had the good idea that we should turn our normal Sunday run into a familiarization run to see the first 18 miles or so of the Burning River 100 course. Armed with a textual description of the race course, we lit out from Squire's Castle at about 8am. Debi and Cindy were committed to stay with us for the first 6 miles and turn back for a total of 12 in their training for the Cleveland half marathon. Josh, Kurt, and I were to continue on the course to the Shadow Lake aid station at mile 18.4 and then back to my car about a mile later.

After a chilly, but not cold, start at the Castle....
