In the interests of getting my head back together, I went seriously 'off schedule' yesterday.

Welcome back to altitude, lungs

Posted by simon on 7/22/2007 on simon's blog

Well, that was a bit of a shock!

I've hardly run since last Sunday's 10k at sea level in London's Hyde Park, but today was Back to Schedule day. I met Bobby McGee, Marci and fellow milers Kyle and Frank for an early-morning training session on the Pearl Street Mile course.

Sub 5-Minute-Mile Training

http://www.yourrunning.com/forum-where_eagles_dare

Flexibility, coach Bobby McGee declares, will be perhaps the deciding factor in how fast we go. We don’t need the supra-normal range of motion of gymnasts and martial artists, but we do need enough freedom and suppleness to be able to move our legs at 4:40 per mile pace, and we have to have arms, shoulders, backs and hips that don’t slow us up by their stiffness and lack of mobility. This special type of speed and mobility training is also designed to allow us to train at target speed without getting injured.

How Do You Know if a Goal is Out of Reach?

http://www.yourrunning.com/blog-how_do_you_know_if_a_goal_is_out_of_reac...

How do you know if a goal is achievable or not?

I've worked out that what I do is pick a goal that in my mind is huge, but has a possibility of being achieved. I mean literally "in my mind" -- for example, I can see myself running a 36-minute 10k at altitude; I can't see myself winning the Olympic title. Anywhere!)

Slash 11mins off 10K PB

http://www.yourrunning.com/forum-slash_11mins_off_10k_pb

Q: Hi Simon, I read your were like 53 but sounds like your going on 23. :) Can you enlighten me on how you managed to slash 11mins off your 10K P.B?
Regards, Nev

How do you know if a goal is out of reach, or not?

Fellow-Brit Nev Johnson has got me thinking with his posts here. First he asked me to outline how I managed to take 11 minutes off my 10k time in a year.

My first item in my list was "Set a clear, quantifiable goal that I was really, really excited about."

Nev came back with the comment: "Most people would say that your goal was way out of reach."

That got me pondering again. How do you know if a goal is achievable or not?

Drills and Mobility Exercises: Muscle Activation

http://www.yourrunning.com/blog-spring_in_the_step#comment-4115

Q: Simon - I saw Bobby McGee talk at a USAT session back in November and he discussed "muscle activation" exercises and using them even during a marathon, etc...

To be honest I don't recall a specific discussion about what activation exercises he gets people to do...

Benefits of Pilates/ Pain Pays Off

There were times during the first month of starting Pilates to rehab my adductor strain that I wondered whether I was actually a Pilates practitioner who happened to do a bit of running, rather than a runner using Pilates to recuperate.

How not to heel-strike?

http://www.yourrunning.com/forum-how_not_to_heel_strike#comment-4591

Q: Here's a serious question from someone who definitely doesn't have perfect form. What can I do to improve my form so that I'm properly landing on the balls of my feet - and thus be a candidate for a pair of those garish colored Newtons?

And do I have to learn to run like that to be a successful runner? (Would Bobby be faster if adapted and learned to love the Newtons?)

Bit of a breakthrough...

"Oh, no pressure then!" was my comment as I spotted Sir Coach Bobby McGee AND assistant Marci walking through the gates of the Potts Field track last night.

Here am I trying to do this low-key event and now I know I will be under scrutiny. Oh, I am so ungrateful sometimes! These two never put their athletes under pressure -- it is all self-generated.
