A Very Special Night

Posted by Runner NYC on 7/21/2007 on Runner NYC's blog

Bobby Bostic, who recently ran the North Pole Marathon as a fundraiser for CFA, invited me to sit at the table he sponsored at the Challenged Athletes Foundation Celebration of Heroes, Heart and Hope benefit. I accepted not only for the opportunity to attend this amazing event, but also to meet him in person, finally, after exchanging comments and messages on-line here.

Hot enough for you in the Sahara?

The Story

Sean Cornwell and Ed Stumpf were among the runners at the 2007 North Pole Marathon. Perhaps taking a cue from Bobby Bostic (now a veteran of not only the North Pole Marathon but also the Death Valley Ultramarathon), the duo also ran the Sahara Marathon earlier this year. This short video documents the run. I wonder what was more brutal? ... I'm guessing the Sahara race. Sean, who is a senior product marketing manager at Google, also blogged about the 2 races on the Official Google Blog.

More hot and cold running

Posted by steve outing on 4/16/2007 on steve outing's blog | Groups: North Pole Marathon

Bobby Bostic isn't the only one, it seems, to have quite a Hot and Cold Running tale to tell. (Bobby, who just completed the 2007 North Pole Marathon and bike race, last year finished the Death Valley Ultramarathon.)

As reported on Global Cool, Sean Cornwell and Ed Stumpf have a similar tale. They competed alongside Bobby at the North Pole, and earlier this year completed the Sahara Marathon (as in Sahara Desert in Africa). ... I wonder what's tougher: the Sahara or Death Valley?

Sean, according to the article, also took a brief skinny dip in the Arctic Ocean.

A post-North Pole Skype interview with Bobby from Longyearbyen

Posted by steve outing on 4/9/2007 on steve outing's blog | Groups: North Pole Marathon

So Bobby Bostic completed the North Pole Marathon over the weekend (AND a challenging 26.2-mile bike race) and is now hanging out in Longyearbyen, Norway. He'll be posting up a storm in the coming days with stories and photos about his weekend. Meantime, I got on Skype with him this morning (well, my morning, his evening) just before the awards ceremony. Here's our conversation:

Steve says: Glad you made it back! How was it?

Bobby says: It was fantastic!... I've been trying to load all of my pictures this afternoon, but the connection is dreadfully slow. I started typing up my notes, but got sidetracked with a dogsledding trip I took this morning.

He did it!! Bobby completes North Pole Marathon AND bike race (audio report)

Posted by YourRunning on 4/7/2007 on YourRunning's blog | Groups: North Pole Marathon

Live from the North Pole via satellite phone, here's Bobby Bostic's first account of his polar adventure. He completed the marathon in one minute over 5 hours; took a snooze; then rode a 26.2-mile bike race! Wow. ... Here's his first short audio report. (He sounds tired. Wouldn't you be?!)

As he mentions in his report, he's got his sat phone and welcomes calls at the North Pole. (He'll be there through Sunday.) The number is 011 8816 4145 8659 ... Disclaimer: You'll be billed for the call and it isn't cheap, so be extra sure you want to chat with him!

Please help raise North Pole funds for Challenged Athletes

Posted by steve outing on 2/23/2007 on steve outing's blog | Groups: North Pole Marathon

While Bobby Bostic was the lucky one -- or was he? brrrr :) -- to win the Brad Feld/YourRunning.com North Pole Marathon Entry Giveaway contest, I sincerely hope that you'll want to help him in what really is a noble cause:

Raising up to $250,000 for the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

Each of the last several years Bobby has done some crazy solo endurance thing and raised money for CAF. Last year when he did an ultramarathon in Death Valley, he raised over $150,000.

Any doctors in the house? Cold-running advice

<em>steve outing</em>'s picture
Posted by steve outing on 2/21/2007 | Groups: North Pole Marathon

So as many of you know, Bobby Bostic is heading to the arctic to run in the North Pole Marathon on April 7. Are there any doctors, medical experts, experienced polar runners, etc. out there who can offer him some advice on running an endurance race in sub-zero conditions? What are the medical dangers and things to watch out for during the race?

North Pole Marathon Entry Giveaway winner: Bobby Bostic

Bobby Bostic

When Brad Feld, passionate amateur marathoner and a well known venture capitalist, decided not to run in the North Pole Marathon on April 7, he enlisted the aid of online running community YourRunning.com to find someone crazy enough to take his reserved place in the extreme race.

That didn't turn out to be a difficult task. 65 talented runners entered a contest run by YourRunning.com and begged to be sent to the North Pole to run 26.2 miles on top of the Arctic Ocean.

A hardy winner has been announced: Bobby Bostic, 38, of Oakland, California.

Bobby's athletic credentials are stellar. Since running his first marathon in 1994, he has completed more than 50 marathons and ultramarathons. He took second place in the 1999 Death Valley Badwater Marathon, and finished in the top quartile in the Badwater Ultramarathon last year. He's a five-time ironman finisher, and has done such athletic feats as an all-day run back and forth across the Golden Gate Bridge (78 miles in 12-1/2 hours).
