'Flow like water': suffering downhill in the Evergreen 10k

Posted by simon on 8/7/2008 on simon's blog

"I thought you weren't running this", said John Victoria at the start line of the Evergreen Town Race. Hm, well if I'd known just how hard it was going to be, maybe I'd have stood by my original decision... so a word of explanation...

Living on the edge as the race for Colorado Runner 'yellow jerseys' hots up

Posted by simon on 7/25/2008 on simon's blog

It's a crucial phase in the Colorado Runner Racing Series,. We've had nine events ranging from the opening 5k in January to a half-marathon, and there are seven to go before the Series finishes with the Panicking Poultry 5k in November.

How 'economical' a runner are you?

Posted by simon on 12/13/2007 on simon's blog

Zersenay Tadese, world cross-country and half-marathon champion, may be the most "economical" runner in the world according to a new sports science study.

Researchers in Madrid say that Tadese's uses less oxygen per kilometre than any other athlete ever studied -- and that includes other elite Kenyans. Frank Shorter in his prime tested out at 192 ml/kg/kilometer (running at 3:06/km); Tadese's figures: 150 ml/kg/kilometer (running at 3:09//km and at at 2:51/km).

No satisfaction from a PR

Posted by baldwyn on 9/24/2007 on baldwyn's blog

Last week, the Silicon Valley Marathon sent out an email announcing a "Hat Trick" prize for completing the Almaden Classic 10k (Sept 23), the San Jose R&R Half Marathon (Oct 14), and the Silicon Valley Full Marathon (Nov 4). Since I was already signed up for the half, and was planning on the full, it was a no brainer to run the 10k.

Run to the Lake 10k, Castro Valley, CA - Second in my age group, my first time to the "podium"

I lucked out with a slow field, and placed second in my age group with a 46:25 finish.

Hyde Park 10k: OK, but not brilliant

Posted by simon on 7/16/2007 on simon's blog

75 degrees and humid.... did a comfortable 40:58, wasn't even breathing hard for the first 5k; then picked it up -- my head was tingling by the end. 101st in a field of 10,000 and, as far as I can tell, I won the age group -- but they have not organized the results in a way that I can confirm that.

Splits: 6:24, 6:41, 6:41, 6:31, 6:37, 6:09, 5:28 (pace) last .2m.

Sore throat (still sound like Roger Moore), used glycerine.

Contrast in styles....

Contrast in styles....

By the time I've finished a half-marathon, Stephanie Bylander has cooled down, changed and is on her way home. She's a fast, talented runner... but her style! Wearing the light blue Colorado vest in the Bolder Boulder, Stephanie looks like a fashion model who's been asked to run down the road. She runs on her toes and seems to be leaning backwards; her heels don't seem to touch the ground, ever. She looks cool and effortless, but we roadside coaches couldn't help wondering what would happen if she learnt to use all her foot AND developed a forward lean. Contrast with the aggressive style of el
