Running toward a remedy for global warming

Posted by YourRunning on 1/13/2007 on YourRunning's blog

Brad Feld and YourRunning are giving away an entry to the North Pole Marathon! Here's who has applied to run.

Angelina Korb

Boulder, Colorado
31

Running Experience:
Advanced

Why should we pick you to go to the North Pole?:
I strongly believe in my ability to train for and complete this race. I also feel I have the talent to write creatively about the entire experience. The excitement I feel at the mere prospect has me making plans already! This is the type of adventure I have dreamed of. The opportunity to contribute in some way to addressing the issue of global warming is also a terrific incentive. I love pushing my body to its limits and reaching new levels of fitness, endurance and performance.

Offer some evidence that you can complete a marathon in harsh, sub-zero conditions at the North Pole:
I adore winter!! I feel best in frigid temps. I spent my childhood in Alaska which instilled in me a profound appreciation for nature and the elements. I learned valuable survival skills as we were truly in the wilderness! I then lived in Wisconsin for my later years in school and the winters there are equally as formidable! I grew up on a dairy farm and know the meaning of hard work in the elements. I now live in Colorado and have just as many experiences in the cold here as I love to get to the top of 14ers!

Tell us about your cold-weather race experience:
I am an avid Nordic skier and have competed and won in my age group in the American Birkebeiner Ski Marathon 6 times, the Noquemanon Marathon and numerous other races.

"I actually prefer to run in the snow."

I've run many races in the winter and actually prefer to run in the snow. My father is training for the Iditarod and I often help train the dogs by running in front of them through very deep snow.

Tell us about your marathon experience, including times, results, etc.:
I've run many half-marathons (1:34 best) and two full marathons at altitude- Boulder Backroads Marathon (3:37/12th & 3:38/10th). I love running long distances and most of the time I feel like I could go on forever! I began running at age 6 and have run ever since. I ran cross country and track in high school and cross country in college (Division 1).

What do you expect your North Pole Marathon time to be?:
6 hrs.

Can you write well? Explain:
I enjoy expressing myself through written word and have been told I do so rather eloquently. I like to record my experiences and hope they will inspire others to believe in themselves and go the extra mile.

I feel that global warming is a tragic event. I would love the opportunity to help increase awareness of its devastating effects and hopefully inspire people to make changes that will help curb its advancement. I have a Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science which will help me to better articulate the science aspect behind global warming. I've always been intrigued by winter ecology and have read extensively on the topic. I'm in awe of animals that have developed the ability to withstand extreme climates.

Tell us about your media experience:
I worked as a Union Service Response Team Member in the Student Union in college and the responsibilites included media set up.

Fabrianna says:

Run, Angie, Run! Your enthusiasm and commitment are such a motivation to me. Every time we are together, you have a new adventure to report about . . . some new way that you are pushing your boundaries and stepping it up to the next level, both physically and mentally. When you talk about this race, your eyes light up. I can't wait to watch your success!

Darren says:

Angie, after living in Boulder, CO for 18 years and training regularly with the world's top triatheltes, I can honestly say that you are the most dedicated and hard core athlete that I have ever met. I know your talent, grit, and determination will carry you across the finish line, but your love and passion for the sport, the environment, and your own sense of achievement will carry you across in style! I can't wait to read about your experieinces at the North Pole. You inspire me beyond words. Ukudigal! (That's Eskimo for "Good Luck!")

Karyn says:

You're a beautiful, intelligent, articulate, committed, talented, and fast athlete... and behind a very important cause. You are made for this!!

Sarah says:

Angie, reading your profile I see that you are truly an exceptional runner/athlete. This combined with your strong commitment to protecting our environmental gifts makes you the perfect person to participate in this important race. I am so motivated by you and the goals you continually set and meet for yourself. Good luck good luck good luck!

Rema Korb says:

Dear Angie,
I wish you the best of luck, they would be crazy not to pick you! If I was to think of one person this race would be perfect for it is you.... Growing up as your sister, running-working-playing, there is no one else with your drive and determination once you put your mind to something. If I was going to the North Pole I would want you on my team hands down!!!! PICK MY SISTER!!!!!!

Judy says:

Angie,
I didn't realize you were so good with words. You could have told me that in high school!! I do know one thing that you were always about running and being outdoors in any type of weather. Remember when I tried to take long distance running with you in track? You ran when the snow drifts were 3-4 feet high. I have seen your determination and know you will put in all the extra time and then some to get ready for this race. I also know your passion for protecting the environment, and running toward the remedy for global warming is just the icing on the cake as far as the race goes. I think this race was made for you and it couldn't have come at a better time in your life. I can't wait to hear and read about your experience.

Dan says:

Angie is a great athlete who loves cold weather adventure - her passion for winter sports is second to none. Plus, let's be honest, everyone wants to see a beautiful blonde beating the guys at this type of thing, right? Go get em Angie!

Brian says:

I've known Angie for over a decade now and I have to say that this would be a dream come true for her. I've never met anyone with more passion and enthusiasm for sports (especially cold weather, endurance sports) than she has. If she could, she would be outside nordic skiing or running or summiting a 14'er every chance she could. An Alaskan girl with a Norwegian heritage, she was made for this kind of event. Her limited financial resources have prevented her in the past from competing in events like this. She is a great athlete and an even better person. Pick her, you wont be disappointed.

Bruce says:

I am very pleased to recommend Angie for this event. I believe Angie is an ideal candidate in that she represents the spirit, passion, and ideals that are sought after in the North Pole marathon. I am lucky, I work with Angie. As her supervisor I see a high level of performance in her work as well as her determination in maintaining a superior level of fitness for her sports. If selected, I know Angie would be a strong competitor and give her best effort.
