Brad Feld and YourRunning are giving away an entry to the North Pole Marathon! Here's who has applied to run.

Bobby Bostic

Oakland, California

38

Running Experience:
Advanced

Why should we pick you to go to the North Pole?:
Thank you very much for allowing one VERY lucky runner to take your spot in the 2007 North Pole marathon. I realize it was most likely a difficult decision to pass up the opportunity, so if I am selected to take part, let me say up front that your generosity goes beyond what words can describe. So why choose me? My name is Bobby Bostic. I am a married father of two wonderful children who enjoy watching their daddy do crazy things. I have logged more miles pushing both kids in the jogging stroller around the Oakland Hills than most people do in lifetime. Seven years ago I 'retired' from competitive racing and began racing for another purpose - to raise money to provide adaptive sports equipment to people with physical disabilities. Someone once said that if you run for yourself, it's easy to let yourself down, but if you run for someone else, you'll never let them down. Every race I compete in now whether it's for the win or just to finish, is done with the goal of bringing awareness to those who aren't lucky enough to be able to do what I do. It would be a true honor to be selected. Thank you for the opportunity to apply!

"In addition to running, I am a five-time Ironman finisher and will add my sixth this October at the Ford Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii."

Offer some evidence that you can complete a marathon in harsh, sub-zero conditions at the North Pole:
While none of the races I've done can compare with the harsh COLD of the North Pole, my guess is that most of my fellow hopeful candidates are in the same boat. My athletic endeavors have taken me to many other 'harsh' environments. Just last year I competed in the 135 mile Kiehl's Badwater Ultramarathon in Death Valley, where temperatures soared to over 125 degrees with 25-30% humidity. I realize conditions in Death Valley couldn't be more NOT like the North Pole, but I felt it was worth pointing out that I've successfully competed in enviroments that have the ability to test one's mettle beyond mere physical ability.

Tell us about your cold-weather race experience:
While living abroad in Switzerland, I competed in several cross country ski races as well as several marathons in the Swiss Alps (the Jungfrau Marathon being the most notable). I am an experienced snowboarder and spend much of my winter in Lake Tahoe skiing and doing all things outdoors. It has been a goal of mine to compete in a marathon in arctic conditions, so I am up for the challenge of training for this incredible event.

Tell us about your marathon experience, including times, results, etc.:
Since my first marathon finish in 1994, I have completed over 50 marathon and ultra-marathon events. Some of the more unique events I've been a part of include: second place overall at the 1999 Death Valley Badwater Marathon (envirosports), extreme conditions at the Jungfrau Marathon in the Swiss Alps, a P.R. of 2:47 at the St. George Marathon in Utah, five finishes at the American River 50 Miler, and a top quartile finish at the 2006 Kiehl's Badwater Ultramarathon in Death Valley. In addition to running, I am a five-time Ironman finisher and will add my sixth this October at the Ford Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. In addition to organized races, each year since 2000 I have organized a solo, unaided ultra-distance event benefiting the Challenged Athletes Foundation; a not-for-profit organization that provides funding for adaptive sports equipment to people with physical disabilities. In just 7 years I have raised over a half a million dollars on their behalf. My solo events have included all day runs across the Golden Gate Bridge (78 miles in 12 1/2 hours), 100 kilometer runs through the streets of Los Angeles, and a solo bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. In 2007 my hope would be to use the North Pole Marathon as my fundraising platform.

What do you expect your North Pole Marathon time to be?:
5 hours 45 minutes (of course, I'm guessing - probably less)

Can you write well? Explain:
Because of the scale of the event itself, there would be so much to talk about I don't know where to begin. I envision being able to write about the technology (aka 'gear') involved in running in the conditions we'll face on the North Pole, much like my training for Badwater last year, I'll share both the conventional as well as some of the more 'off beat' methods I'll use to acclimate myself to the conditions I'll face on race day. In the days leading up to the event itself, I'll provide a detailed description of everything going on around me. Through my the blogs I've kept for past races, I've tried to focus as much on the things going on around me as my own race - after all, it's hard to write pages and pages about yourself.. Who wants to read that? Lastly, since I'll be using my participation to raise funds and awareness for disabled athletes, I may put a shameless plug or two in the blog to let folks know why I'm doing it.

Tell us about your media experience:
I have been interviewed by media outlets on several occasion for the fundraising work I do on behalf of the Challenged Athletes Foundation. I have appeared on local TV news stations in Los Angeles and was a guest on 'The Competitors' radio program in San Diego. I would be very comfortable creating video and audio reports on any and all topics regarding my preparation and participation.

Websites:
www.ponyexpressrun.com - my fundraising website, which includes event reports and other tidbits about me. I am the webmaster and event organizer, so everything you see and read is from me. www.challengedathletes.org - I was elected to the Board of Directors of the Challenged Athletes Foundation in 2006. While this website doesn't have anything specific about me, you can read a little about the cause I support.

Show us your video:
I wish I had a video. I'll be sure to send you a bunch of pictures instead.

Bobby Bostic loves to challenge himself (both physically and mentally) in the most outrageous ways. In doing so, he has made it his goal to help others thru his own suffering. His challenges ( ie. fund raising efforts) have benefited the Challenged Athlete's Foundation to the tune of over $500,000.00 thru participation in events such as the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon to last years Death Valley Badwater Ultramarathon. The North Pole Marathon would be a perfect complement to the many events he has challenged himself with in the past, and one which Bobby should be a part of this year!

Barbi Ramage says:

Bobby Bostic has been a fundraiser for the Challenged Athletes Foundation
since 1999. He has become not only our Top Fundraiser of all time, bringing
in over a half a million dollars in donations to the foundation to date, but
also is an outstanding inspiration to many of our other fundraisers. We
have people contact our foundation every day wanting to help CAF by
fundraising, but they have no idea where and how to start. Bobby was so
kind to generate, on his own accord, a Fundraising 101 document that we
share with hundreds of CAF fundraisers around the US.

He is always looking to top his efforts from the year prior; and amazes us
all when he does! Bobby is a genuine and kind person, with a huge heart and
drive for success!

Kristine Entwistle says:

To the esteemed judges,

Bobby Bostic should be your choice for the North Pole Marathon. He competes, he fundraises, he leads, he inspires. The bigger the challenge for this guy, the better.

For years he has sought out competitive events that push him to his limit, all while helping the lives of other athletes along the way. He is also one of the kindest, most well spoken individuals on the planet...so you would have an ambassador as well as a participant.

We would also be happy to step up as his support team and fan club, sending lots of ice or snow cones (or whatever is needed for the bizarre training that must be required).

Sincerely,

Eran Klein says:

Bobby takes fund raising to a whole new level. Each year he outdoes himself in terms of the level of endurance required for the event and his creativity in finding an event that not only makes the fund rasing effort fun, but also astonishes those of us who are big supporters of his. After spending 40 plus hours with him when he ran from Bad Water in Death Valley, CA all the way to the Mt. Whitney Portal, I realize that there's nothing that will deter his will to complete a race and meet his fund raising goals. What's more astonishing is that he has a family (Wife, son and daughter) and a full time job, yet he manages to find time to train for these events, and no matter how difficult the endeavor, he always finishes with a smile on his face. I think he would be a great addition to this marathon, not because of the distance, or the conditions, but because it gives him a the opportunity to PR his fund raising efforts for an amazing cause, The Challenged Athletes' Foundation.

Lee Gould says:

To The Organizers of the North Pole Marathon,

I would like to encourage you to pick Bobby Bostic for this exciting race you have planned. Bobby is an inspiration both on and off the athletic field. I was fortunate enough to ride the CAF Million Dollar Challenge with Bobby last year (ride was from San Francisco to San Diego) and he was perpetually enthusiastic, humble and an unbelievable friend throughout the experience.

Perhaps what distinguishes Bobby's achievements is the fact that he does them to raise money for the Challenged Athletes Foundation whose mission is to help athletes with disabilities. I met Bobby through the foundation as I am a volunteer at the office. I get to see first hand what the funds Bobby raises actually does and who it helps and am continually reminded that Bobby is one of a small group of people who can say they truly did change someone's life.

Think of it as an opportunity to meet someone truly special.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Bob Bergquist says:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I wanted to take a quick moment to tell you about Bobby Bostic and why I
believe you should pick him to send to the North Pole Marathon. As a
marathoner myself, I can't tell you how much in awe I am to hear about
each new running adventure Bobby takes on. Whether it be running the
Badwater, doing 100 miles through the middle of the night in the streets
of L.A., or running the North Pole there is no running challenge that
Bobby isn't willing to take on. That, in itself is inspiring to guys
like me, who lumber through to barely finish a marathon on our best day.

But for Bobby, it doesn't stop there... he doesn't do it for himself. He
does it for people that need some help "getting back on their feet." He
does it for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). I have had the
opportunity to meet people like Trish Downing, who was a competitive
cyclist that was hit by a car and paralyzed. As a result of the work of
CAF, she is now the first female paraplegic athlete to finish an Iron
Distance Triathlon (and qualify for Kona in the process). CAF wouldn't
be able to do the work they do without Bobby. Bobby has had a tremendous
impact on CAF with his generous support. That impact is something that
inspires all of us, marathoner or not. Because of that impact, I doubt
you could find anyone that would be more deserving for the trip.

I have tried to keep my comments concise, but would be happy to discuss
at length, if you would like. Please feel free to contact me.

Virginia Tinley says:

Bobby Bostic would be an exceptional addition to the North Pole
Marathon. He has a history of competing in extreme running events
including his own creation, the Pony Express Run, a 100-mile run through
the streets of downtown Los Angeles, him being the only participant,
with the goal of raising money for the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
Bobby is a high level executive with the Capital Group Companies,
husband, father of two young children, and still finds time to compete
in events such as the Death Valley Badwater Ultramarathon and Hawaii
Ironman as well as raise significant money for charity. He is a man of
outstanding character and would be a worthy contest winner!

Cheryl Ennis says:

I have known Bobby since before he ran his first marathon. I can't think of any person who deserves the opportunity more to participate in this event. Over the past several years, Bobby has created, or participated in, ever-increasingly extreme events in order to raise higher and higher contributions for the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Bobby's dedication to this charity and to his sport are second to none.

In addition, Bobby is just a nice, enthusiastic person who is a pleasure to know. I would highly recommend that Bobby be given the opportunity to participate in this event.

Lee Trenum says:

I don't know anyone else applying for the trip, but I can' t imagine a more deserving person than Bobby Bostic. He has an unbelievable passion (and ability) to find creative ways to push himself to incredible limits for the benefit of others. Bobby works for a very large organization and is known throughout it for his extraordinary feats of endurance. Whether it's running more than a marathon through southern California, including stairwells of skyscrapers, or biking from San Francisco to LA, or running the equivalent of 75 miles across the Golden Gate bridge, or running an ultramarathon in Death Valley, he finds the most interesting and challenging ways to test himself and help others at the same time. Running a marathon at the north pole is as natural a next step as I can imagine for him. And by selecting Bobby you not only get a talented and capable competitor, but you get to help challenged athletes too. It seems like a great way to maximize the impact of your choice. Bobby's your man!

Matt Carter says:

My name is Matt Carter and I've had the opportunity to work with Bobby Bostic over the last few years. I have been completely impressed with his passion for his sport and his willingness to help others. He has done quite a few charity events at our company over the years, which every time becomes more difficult and more impressive. If you are looking for a candidate that is hard working, dedicated to his sport, honest, funny and an all around good guy, Bobby is your guy.

Terry Ragsdale says:

Bobby Bostic has done plenty of similarly insane things over the years, both to see if he can do them and to raise money for folks who need it. I can't think of anybody more deserving of this insane-to-the-max polar experience, and Bobby will no doubt find a way to raise a bunch more money for physically-challenged athletes at the same time.

Robert Ronus says:

I have known Bobby Bostic for many years through work. I cannot think
of anyone I know who would be a better candidate for a Polar marathon than
Bobby. He is an outstanding long distance athlete and has done the
races to prove it. He is smart and a very responsible person who plans
carefully and and calculates very precisely the risks he takes. He is
also a modest man and a very nice guy who is a real team player. Finally,
he has used his athletic feats to raise money for the Challenged Athletes'
Foundation, a very worthy and appropriate cause.

Karen Alkofer says:

Bobby Bostic is an amazing athlete who has competed in all types of marathons around the world. More than that, Bobby is an mentor to those who are a bit more mortal. His work with the Challenged Athletes Foundation has been an inspiration to everyone. He has raised thousands of much-needed funds for the CAF - and has been supportive of each and every athlete of the foundation. He has raised awareness for the foundation amongst his friends and colleagues around the world with his appeals for support of his races. I urge you to select Bobby to compete in the North Pole Marathon. You will be blessed to meet a great athlete and generous humanitarian.

Fatchi Dadji says:

I have known Bobby for more than 10 years for now. The reasons why you should award him the trip are:
1. Ever since the first day I met him, it was clear that running was his main passion. His eyes light up when he talks about it, he gets all excited (and he's an accounting guy, so you know that means something).
2. Not only is he fully dedicated to his passion - in terms of the time he gives, the training, the dietary discipline - but he has run many times for charity and I am sure that with this trip he may have a great opportunity to raise funds while doing something exceptional.
3. He's grown up in Arizona, and ran all over the world - including London and Switzerland and Asia, but I don't think he's ever run in such cold conditions, it would be good to see what's he's worth in these tough conditions.
4. He's got a young family - 2 boys - and with the price of raising kids these days (all those i-Pod accessories) and given he is an accountant, there's no way he'll be able to justify going on his own account (and his wife wont let him anyway), whereas if he wins the prize, everyone will know they have to let him go.
5. What's great about him is that while he lets you know that he loves running, Bobby is not a show-off: he's discrete and modest about his successes (not minor for the average person), unlike some people, who get all up in your face with what they do - he just does it and shows the way by his actions. This would be a fitting way to reward that.
6. Finally, he's getting older these days and if you don't give it to him, he is probably crazy enough to go there regardless next year just because he did not get it, so it would be better for him to do it now.

John Guthrie says:

Bobby,
I think you'd be a great candidate for the North Pole Marathon.
I've worked with you for several years, and I've seen your dedication to the
job, your ability to complete assignments quickly and accurately, and
your focus on even the minor details. I believe those characteristics would
serve you very well in preparing for such a challenging event. I've
also seen you complete the Death Valley Badwater Ultramarathon, which again
takes a level of dedication and commitment which would augur well for
your ability to complete a challenge like the North Pole Marathon. Good
luck in this exciting adventure. Please keep me informed of your progress.

Tom McDevitt says:

I have only known Bobby as a very able and amiable person who has been providing client service to my firm for the past 5 years. It was only recently that I discovered he was also a dedicated athlete specializing in extreme running events. His achievement at the Death Valley race boggles my mind. In my younger and leaner days I ran several marathons and I know the toll that takes on both the body and the mind. I shutter to think that he had to endure five consecutive marathons with a 10k for kick in order to complete the race. I am certain that Bobby Bostic would be a great addition to your race.

Clive Gershon says:

Bobby Bostic is the most dedicated runner I know. He is also completely
nuts (in a good way). For many years he has put his body to the limits
by running in a series of events that no regular human being would ever
contemplate, and not for his own good but for the good of a diverse
range of deserving people. He tirelessly works to raise money for individuals that are most deserving, all by running in the strangest of places. It will be wonderful if you can enable him to run in the marathon at the Pole. It would top all his
achievements to date and I'm sure help raise a lot more money for an extremely
worthy cause. Besides we can all live vicariously through Bobby, even if we
are only able to run 3-4 miles at a time ourselves.

Sarah Reinertsen says:

To the North Pole Marathon – and yourrunning.com –

I am writing this email in support of my friend Bobby Bostic – who has submitted an entry to the contest to run the Coolest Marathon in the world!

I am a disabled triathlete that met Bobby through his support of the charity of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). Bobby has raised more than $500,000 for this organization helping many athletes disabled like me. He is an incredible athlete – having done several Hawaii Ironmans, runs or bike rides down the entire coast of California . Bobby does these athletic feats because he is of course an athlete – but he is above all a humanitarian, and he uses these athletic feats to always create a positive change in the world for someone else. His passion and dedication to help others is inspiring. And I know first hand how much his support of charities like the CAF means.

I am an amputee my left leg was amputated above the knee when I was a child – through the CAF I have gone on to become an athlete. I am the first woman on an artificial leg to do the Hawaii Ironman triathlon. I am the first amputee to compete on the CBS reality TV show “The Amazing Race.” Through the CAF I give clinics to other amputees (many of the US soldiers who are coming back from Iraq war) to teach them how to run, bike – and be active again, to teach them how to be athletes (recreational or elite) and give them a chance to get back in the game and to feel whole again.

Bobby knows as an athlete how much fun it can be to challenge yourself in these weekend warrior events – but he has a greater purpose. Bobby has spent years raising money for the CAF to ensure this same opportunity to a whole generation of disabled children and adults who need a little more support in getting to that starting line. If anyone should go to the end of the earth to run a marathon on the coldest place on the earth – I know Bobby can do the race, and I also know that he will change the lives of thousands of others while he does.

I proudly support Bobby Bostic!

Best,

Sarah

Tia Jackson says:

I am writing to support Bobby Bostic as the person to be selected to go to the North Pole. Although I have not had the opportunity to meet Bobby yet, I feel like I already know him. I feel that way because I strongly share the same passions for running, and at the same time, more importantly, the primary purpose of contributing to the progress and growth of others who face bigger physical challenges. I know because as a fellow-marathoner, I have successfully completed six marathons and several century rides over the past six years, while fundraising for their sponsoring charitable organizations. I can only believe that given Bobby's dedication and discipline for doing what he loves, will inspire others with hope, courage, and confidence that he is the best choice for this wonderful opportunity.

Paul Catherwood says:

If anyone should be given a spot in the North Pole Marathon, it's Bobby Bostic. Not only is this guy an animal of a runner, he's also an incredible fund raiser.

Last year, Bobby went to extremes of heat, cold and endurance in the Death Valley Badwater Ultramarathon. While hammering out the miles in the California desert, he raised $100K for the Challenged Athletes Foundation. I've no doubt that he'll give equally impressive athletic and fund raising efforts if given the chance to compete at the top of the world.

Jeffrey Essakow says:

My pleasure. Hope it helps.

Over the last 8 years Bobby Bostic has been relentless in his pursuit
to unselfishly raise money for Challenged Athletes. Challenged Athletes is
an organizing that helps challenged individuals get back in the game
through sport. We have raised in excess of $10 million dollars and assisted
more than 2000 individuals world wide.

Bobby has been the foundation all time fundraiser and for this reason
was the first person in 13 years to be inducted into the foundations
Fundraising Hall of Fame for reaching the amazing life time number of $500k.

As the President of this foundation since it's inception 13 years ago,
I am yet to meet anybody who fundraises with such a high degree of integrity
and passion. It was for this reason that Bobby was unanimously voted to the
Challenged Athletes Board.

I have no hesitation in strongly recommending Bobby for your race. I
hope you will accept his application which should give you the satisfaction
that, by doing so, you will be assisting Bobby to meaningfully touch the
lives of hundreds of challenged individuals.

Thank you for considering Bobby Bostic.

Mark Casey says:

Bobby has been trying to get to the North Pole for a long time. The
North Pole, as we all know from looking at the globe, is "up" from wherever
you are. In the past Bobby would try to generate as much "up" power as he
could by sprinting up 56 flights of stairs to the top of the Bank of
America skycraper in Los Angeles (frequently after running 40 or 50
miles to raise money for the Challenged Athletes Foundation). Even with his
great speed, however, Bobby wasn't able to generate enough of an upward
head of steam to escape from Los Angeles's gravitational field to fly
up to the Pole. With your help, however, he can get there, and raise even
more money for the CAF.

Lionel Sauvage says:

I have followed Bobby for a decade in his fund raising activities. Everything has been said on him, but the simple fact that year after year Bobby has been looking for the next more difficult challenge, preparing for it, executing it, and at the same time raising money for a worthy cause; all of that says that Bobby is an intelligent, determined person, able to evaluate risk, and going for it one step at a time.
I am convinced he is "The Man" for this new challenge, I just wonder what will be next!
Lionel

Mark Nunez says:

My name is Mark Nunez,

I am a runner myself, I work with Bobby Bostic, and I just wanted to say that Bobby is an inspiration for all runners at the Capital Group Inc companies and I am sure to many others, therefore I would recommend sending Bobby NORTH!

Each year Bobby does some absolutely insane running event, all for a good cause, to help raise money for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). In years past Bobby has run from out West Los Angeles office to our Brea office, then to our Los Angeles office (that's many miles), all in an effort to inspire us here at the Capital Group
to help out and give money to support a wonderful cause, the CAF.

Bobby also goes out to find sponsors to have a silent auction during his run,
again to raise money for the CAF. I believe the CAF is a wonderful cause, and
Bobby, through his good will, and his not so tired feet, has helped raise
thousands of dollars for the CAF. Given that Bobby has completed the
Badwater Ultramarathon and five Ironmans, I shiver to think of it, but I
am sure he could do well at the North Pole Marathon and it would be yet
another spring board for him to raise even more for the CAF.

Thank you,
Mark Nunez

Cindy Kim says:

Every year I am always excited to hear what marathon Bobby will be participating in. It amazes me how he is able to balance both his personal and professional ambitions, and truly performs well at both. I’ve worked with Bobby for many years where he has demonstrated the drive to push himself to consistently exceed my expectations. Like his professional career he is innovative and dedicated to achieving his goals. His personal goals are selfless unlike no other who may have a hobby to run for their own wellbeing but devoted to benefiting the Challenged Athletes Foundation. His selflessness is a rare character possessed by very few. I sincerely admire his ambition and integrity and feel if selected, Bobby Bostic would bring true meaning to this amazing race.

Jonathan Young says:

Commitment is a word we don't hear a lot anymore, but Bobby is one of the most committed individuals I know. He is committed to family, work, running & charity. His commitment to the Challenged Athletes Foundation should serve as an inspiration to us all.

Greg Hind says:

To whom it may concern,

I was informed by Bobby that he is applying to compete in the North Polar Marathon. I could tell from his description that he was extremely excited about the opportunity. We first met through the Pony Express Run which he founded. His work has provided funding to help physically challenged individuals reach their athletic goals. The Pony Express run and the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge challenge, among a few, raised over $150,000 for the Challenged Athletes' Foundation.

Bobby has been testing garments and providing input to us over several years. His keen insights and commitment to detail has helped to improve our products. His dedication to his workouts and to his performance has made him very valuable as a tester. In preparing for the Death Valley Badwater UltraMarathon one morning he rode on his trainer from 1:00am until 5:30am. We are lucky to find someone of this caliber who participated in such grueling events that test both the person and products e.g. Kona, Ironman Arizona, as well as others that he has created to test himself and to raise monies for non-profit organizations.

It is my firm belief that you could not get a better person to participate in your race or a better spokesman. His preparation for the event will be a full commitment setting an example for others.

Andy Stenovec says:

Happy to help Bobby. I genuinely support your efforts to raise money for the CAF...you are a unique individual who deserves special credit for the efforts/energy expended to help these well deserving people. You have a history of embarking on truely extraordinary races to raise money and I think the North Pole Marathon would be the ultimate (besides a race up Mt. Everest). I think you deserve a spot in this race - yourrunning.com will surely benefit from your enthusiasm and positive attitude.

Best of Luck!
Andy

Jonathon Paul says:

Bobby,

I could say a lot of stuff about how you're a nice guy, a great athlete,
dedicated to your family, and so on. But let's face it - the thing
that really matters is that you are the only guy I know that considers
giving up at least one, if not both of his kidney's to run across the desert
and raise money for charity. So, a little bit of hypothermia - quick
recovery. Frostbite - they can cut it off. Polar bear - he can have a
snack - you'll still cross the finish line for a great cause.

Don't know if that's what you wanted, but that's my story and I'm
sticking to it.

Hope all is well.

Ed Gaskin says:

Dear YourRunning.com,

I'm writing in support of Bobby Bostic's application to run the North Pole marathon. He is a class act all around and a spectacular athlete. His sense of humor and willingness to go above and beyond will make for a VERY interesting Blog that I and the other members of our running group will tune in to read for sure.

I realize you have a difficult decision ahead of you, but scanning through the various entries, if it were up to me, the choice would be simple.

Thanks for listening!

Pierce Pape says:

Dear YourRunning.com North Pole Marathon Review Committee:

Whether I’m the first or the last to endorse Bobby Bostic, please accept my endorsement for Bobby to participate in your race.

Although he is not as fit for the cold race as a penquin would be, he has the heart to weather any cold weather and storm that should arise. The name he choose for his organization – The Pony Express Run – shows his attitude of finishing what he starts. As has been quoted many times to describe a Pony Express Carrier - neither by snow nor rain nor heat nor darkness from accomplishing their appointed course with all speed

Upon his completion which I’m confident of, Bobby would represent the stellar type of North Pole Marathon alumni participates that would make your organization shine. I vigorously urge you to accept Bobby Bostic for a position at the starting line, maybe even becoming your “Pole position leader” at the start to represent an outstanding personal individual who overcomes challenges and continues to help others along the trail in life.

Thank you for consideration of Bobby Bostic as a participant in your race.

Enjoy the Journey,

Paul Anderson says:

If I were a betting man, my bet would be that Bobby is not going to do a 5:45 marathon as noted above, but go for the overall win. Of course, now that I've opened my mouth, the pressure will really be on him to perform if he is selected.

Seriously though, Bobby is truly a fixture in the running and triathlon community. Not only does he compete in races that 99.9% of the population couldn't do, but he does it with a smile and a sense of humor that is quite catchy. His support of the Challenged Athletes Foundation is unmatched and without a doubt what makes him a truly special guy. He does what he does for others - never (or rarely) for himself.

If you're looking for an incredible athlete with an amazing outlook on life, a true humanitarian, a witty guy who can keep people tuned in with interest to his blog covereage you should look no further than Bobby.

Thanks!

Alan Shanken says:

There is no doubt in my mind that Bobby Bostic is the perfect competitor to participate in the North Pole Marathon. Not only does he have an accomplished running background he has the mental drive as well. I am a challenged athlete active in CAF and can testify first hand what a difference Bobby has made for the Challenged Athletes Foundation. His personal drive, to continuously challenge his own athletic and mental core, serves as both a role model and an inspiration for those who truly have physical limitations.

Steve Holman says:

"Inspiration, motivation and insight. While not knowing Bobby very long
this is what I have received from him over such a short acquaintance. I
recently met Bobby via email through a friend of a friend while I training
for my first 50 mile ultramarathon. I had sustained an injury and was
seeking advice. Bobby very willingly jumped in with suggestions and
encouragement. Moreover, when I mentioned my goal was to qualify to run in
the Western States 100 Endurance Run, Bobby, without hesitation, volunteered
to pace me at the race. Having never met me nor knowing anything about me,
he showed the true spirit of what makes athletes great, the wiliness to
share his skills and talent with one in need. After repeated attempts to
provide Bobby an "out" after so quickly volunteering for such a huge
undertaking of personal sacrifice to one he'd never met, he proved to me
that his willingness to help was both persistent and genuine. I now look
forward with emboldened confidence that I have incredible support to help
ensure a successful completion of my challenge.

Bobby's list of accomplishments and generous activities to assist those more
challenged is as exhaustive as it is admirable. However, while these
activities provide some tangible insight into one's character the true
measure are the personal gifts of one's time and energies to others along
with the self-sacrificing efforts manifested in selfless acts of kindness
and generosity, without hint of obligation. As a benefactor of his
willingness and generosity I can fully attest to the fact that Bobby
embodies the characteristics most needed in athletics in general and
endurance sports in particular. Not only does Bobby possess the drive,
determination and competitiveness that makes him a great athlete, he
embodies the spirit that makes him a great person."

Adam Chase says:

Bobby:

I took a few moments to look at the various applicants for this contest and, having skimmed over most of them, I'd have to say that although I'd love to go the North Pole for the marathon and hope that I'm selected, you appear very qualified as both a runner and a good person so "if they don't pick me, I hope they pick you." I reckon this is all just a long run and it is a lot easier to support your fellow runners than it is to try to compete against them. If this were a race and we were running or snowshoeing near one another as the miles ticked by, I've little doubt that we'd be sharing stories about our kids, past events, dreams of the future, what compells us, etc. and probably cross the finish line together. Good luck.

Adam Chase, Boulder, Colorado

Bobby Bostic says:

Hi Adam,
Thanks for the kind words. Needless to say, this could be the trip of a lifetime, so I am selfishly crossing my fingers that I am picked, but am also amazed at the incredible talent out there.

Best of luck Adam! I hope our paths cross at some point.

Bobby

Tom Wise says:

Are you friggin' nuts? While my own life list doesn't include a trip to the North Pole (unless Gore is right and the temperatures go up about 90 degrees), when Bobby told me what he was hoping to do, the first words out of my mouth were "how can I help?".

Not wanting to add too much to what people have already said about him (all of what I've read above is exactly what I would have written anyway), I can offer up that in addition to being a better athlete at any distance in any condition than anyone I know, he is a genuinely good person.

Through write-ups of other (crazy) events he's participated in, he does an amazing job of capturing the true essence of what it's like to be there. My only hope is that he gets chosen so we can all experience the race "first hand" through him without running the risk of frostbite.

Lastly, I'm sure he'll use the event to raise an incredible amount of money for charity as he does every year. Since this entry probably can't be deleted, put me in for $500 for the CAF if you get in!

Thanks!

Eric Frieder says:

I'll keep this short, because everyone above has stolen what I was going to say...

Bobby is a true competitor, a true humanitarian, and a class act (oh, and wicked fast regardless of where you plop him down to run)! I can't wait to read about his adventures and misadventures at the North Pole. If it were my contest, he would be the one I'd pick without thinking twice about it.

Eric

P.S. Bobby, what does Dee think about all of this? I'm sure your kids are thrilled!

Antonella Sherman says:

If there is anyone who deserves to be accepted to do this marathon, it would be you, friend! you are a “freak” in a great way. You set a goal and train hard and never disappoint your supporters or sponsors. I really admire you and envy you (but you know that).

Much love and freak-admiration, Ant

Caden Bostic says:

OK - I'm pulling out the big guns... This is from my 6 year old son Caden...

"My daddy should go to the North Pole because he is the best daddy in the whole wide world and he also won a ton of races. I would like him to bring me a toy penguin or a real one or some snow. ~Caden"

Saylor Bostic says:

and now a word from my daughter Saylor (she's 3):

Pick my daddy "because I want to be your elf and so can my baby. Caden could be your elf too and uh.. we could send people Christmas presents if they didn't have Christmas. If you want to take a shower, then you have to bring lots of clothes because it's too cold"

How can you argue with that?
Saylor's Daddy - Bobby

Todd Price says:

Nice one Bostic! How can you compete with the sincerity and honesty of small children.

Anyway, most definitely Bobby is your guy. He's an outstanding runner, great story teller (always finding the right mix to keep it interesting), and all around good person. If anyone deserves to go based on their contribution to world peace, it's Bostic.

I will be tuning in daily to see how both the contest and (hopefully) Bobby's arctic adventure take shape.

Talk to you later!

Carl Kawaja says:

I wholeheartedly endorse Bobby's application to run in the North Pole marathon. He is an extraordinary athlete and a better person than ana thlete. He has raised money for the Challenged Athletes Foundation in a variety of staggering events for years and I have been an enthusiastic contributor. He prepares meticulously and rallie stremendous community support. My wife and I support a variety of charitable causes but contributing to what Bobby does is one of our favorite things every year.

Jeff Paster says:

To Whom It May Concern:
I have followed Bobby Bostic's running carrer now for several years. He is just the kind of guy to run in your North Pole event. His vast experience includes Iron Man events, marathons, extreme marathons, and special extreme competitions such as the Death Valley climb last summer in 120+ degree heat. Bobby has proven time and time again that he has the discipline to prepare and be competitive no matter what the conditions. And he probably will use the opportunity to add to the hundreds of thousands of dollars he has raised for The Challenged Athletes Foundation. You would be missing an opportunity if you don't sign him up quickly!

Alice Dockter says:

Bobby would have made a great mate for Ernest Shackleton on the Endurance. Take him, please.

Leann Irvine says:

I am writing in support of Bobby Bostic to be given the chance of a lifetime to run in the world's coolest marathon. He is an inspiration to those who know him and I am confident that the North Pole marathon will be a more exhilarating and inspiring event if Bobby is selected to participate.

Sincerely,
Leann Irvine

Ian Murray says:

Bobby,

You are a running inspiration, and this challenge seems perfectly appropriate as the next step in your running career. I KNOW that you’ll do well at the Pole and I think of you there as I’m hammering out a sub 4 hour marathon off the bike at Ironman Arizona in April.

Erin Covington says:

When Bobby commits to something he follows through. He has impressed me throughly throughout the years with his dedication and passion for running, his family and the CAF. He has succeeded in several extreme endurance challenges to raise money for others who also have a passion for sporting endeavors, so they too can know that special feeling of accomplishment. He is absolutely the right person for this fabulous adventure!

Tim Edgars says:

Two words - CLASS ACT! Bobby is not only the best runner I know, but the 110% he gives to everything he does is what (to me) makes him the obvious choice. I'm sure the other applicants are more than worthy physically (at the upper end of the skill level, people tend to be more or less equal in terms of ability), but Bobby has that extra something that if bottled and sprinkled over the planet, we'd all be a lot better off. Seriously though, he is a true asset to this world both on and off the field. Pick him and you won't be disappointed.

Brad Wise says:

I've known bobby for over 10 years and what impresses me the most about him (this all has nothing to do with running, because it's obvious he's a star in that category) is his dedication to whatever he puts his mind to. I rarely see him do anything at half effort. He either gives it his all or he's not involved. When he told me about this opportunity, you could just hear from his voice that he is excited beyond belief that he has a chance to go to the North Pole. My first thought was "you're nuts", and then I recognized that "I want this" tone in his voice that makes you just want to get out the way and watch him execute..

He's a great story teller and would do a fantastic job not only covering his race, but everything else. When he was training for the badwater ultramarathon last year, he came up with some pretty amazing training techniques that had the rest of us smiling, so I can't wait to hear what he comes up with for this. His adventure to the pole is one I would follow from start to finish and I know of many many others who feel the same way.

Lastly, (but not "leastly") - his dedication to the Challenged Athletes Foundation is off the charts. I know he would turn his participation in to several hundred thousand dollars to help others. For me, it would be worth it to send him right there.

Good luck BRB! We're all pushing for you!
Brad

Dan Gannon says:

Bobby-

I am one of the other "competitors", if that is the right term, for the North Pole Marathon trip. I have to say that I am quite impressed with your resume, and in particular with your dedication to the cause of raising funds to help challenged athletes. It is clear to me that you are very deserving of participating in this event, and if you are selected I hope that you will add me to your list of donors to your cause.

If I had a vote, you would get it.

Best of luck-

Dan

Bobby Bostic says:

Thanks Dan,

That means a lot. Best of luck to you too! I think this will be the trip of a lifetime!

Bobby

Marilyn Bostic says:

The strong unselfish spirit that drives Bobby to endeavor to help those less fortunate than himself has been with him since he was a child. He has always been kind to others, and full of creativity. His drive and adventuresome spirit helped him to become an Eagle Scout, to pursue through college with double degrees, and continue on with his CPA certificate, to travel during his college and high school years throughout Europe in the summers to learn as much as he could about the world and it's people, and to learn to speak three languages. After college Bobby began his athletic career as a marathon runner and triathlete for charity. Every run that Bobby makes is done to help others less fortunate by raising money. He will make you proud that you chose him, and many disabled athletes with Challenged Athletes Foundation will benefit from having him in the North Pole Run.

Erin P says:

Hi Bobby! We're all rooting for you down here in Los Angeles! You know you deserve it when even some of your competitors are writing in in support of you.

To the people making the decision, I have been a proud supporter of Bobby's epic journies for over 5 years and gladly endorse his application to get shipped to the North Pole. He is a tireless father, athlete, philanthropist and somehow finds time to work full-time in a very demanding industry and sleep.. I swear his days must be 30 hours for all he fits in and still he finds the energy to keep that smile and sense of humor. I can't wait to read about how he goes about training for this adventure and of course to see pictures of him smiling from the North Pole this April!

To Whom It May Concern,

Bobby Bostic is the most dedicated and single minded individual I have ever met in my life. When he decided that The Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) would be his charity of choice, he simply became the biggest fundraiser and best ambassador we have ever had. The fact that Bobby has raised over $500,000 for CAF is only the beginning of the story. Bobby spreads the word about the good work that the Foundation does to anyone and everyone he meets. He spends quality time with our athletes so that he knows what they need and how best to help them. He is also in constant touch with our CAF staff to see how else he can help.

If anyone else says they would like to go to the North Pole to run a marathon, I would simply laugh and figure they don't have any idea what they are in for. With Bobby, I'm sure he is already sourcing a cold storage unit to train in and the right clothing, nutrition and shoes for the adventure.

Bobby Bostic is a very special person who deserves the opportunity to freeze his ass off for a GREAT cause!

Please let me know if I can provide any more information on this extraordinary individual with a true heart of gold.

Thank you!

Jerome Deck, Jr. says:

Dear Sirs:

When I first met Bobby Bostic four years ago I was a stressed out physician practicing internal medicine and a very mediocre runner. (I'm a slug). I learned that Bobby was a runner, too. I asked him how far he ran, and he answered "3 or 4 on a fairly regular basis."

"3 or 4 miles? Hey that's what I do, too!" I told him.

"No," he gently corrected, "3 or 4 Lake Merritts."

(Lake Merritt is the urban jewel in Oakland, California, which is 3 miles around). He was circumnavigating this lake 3 or 4 times on an almost daily basis, and sometimes he did it while pushing his two kids in a jogging stroller!.

"Holy Cow!" I mused, "Doesn't this guy have chores to do?"

I was immediately struck, however, that despite Bobby's rigorous training and heroic feats of endurance, he had a gentle demeanor, a personable nature and a down to earth attitude about everything in life, including his running. I could talk to him about parenting, living in Oakland and even my running.

Hey, my running is still mediocre, but Bobby's wisdom and friendliness has inspired me to keep pushing and to take baby steps in my training. Somehow his unassuming words and encouragement have sunk in. Th
