Around the world in 30 marathons

Posted by YourRunning on 1/13/2007 on YourRunning's blog

Brad Feld and YourRunning are giving away an entry to the North Pole Marathon! Here's who has applied to run.

Russell Secker

Austin, Texas
51

Running Experience:
Advanced

Why should we pick you to go to the North Pole?:
I'm originally a Brit, and have resided for the last 5 years in Austin, Texas, where I'm President of Austin Runners Club. I volunteer coach for the local training program, Rogue Running. I have run marathons for the last 25 years, and multi-day stage race ultras for the last 5 years. In 2005, I ran coast-to-coast across France in 18 days.

I ran my 3hr 13 marathon PR at age 49, 2 years ago; I'm a competitive age grouper with hardiness, fortitude and media savvy.

"I've run about 30 'regular' marathons, including Boston, New York, London, Paris, Dublin and Chicago."

Offer some evidence that you can complete a marathon in harsh, sub-zero conditions at the North Pole:
I lived in the North East US for 15 years, and ran through every winter. I've also downhill and cross-country skied for most of the last 30 years.

Tell us about your cold-weather race experience:
I've run in just about every weather extreme, short of the poles or Death Valley. I always run for fitness while I'm on ski trips, and enjoy the cold when I do.

Tell us about your marathon experience, including times, results, etc.:
I've run about 30 "regular" marathons, including Boston, New York, London, Paris, Dublin and Chicago. In 2003, I finished 6th in the 3-day Tahoe (Triple) Marathon. In 2005, I finished 11th in the annual trans-France race, the Transe Gaule (18 days, 40+ miles per day - see blog info below). This year I'll run Austin and Boston marathons, then in September I'm running in the trans-Germany race, the Deutschlandlauf; see here. Lastly, I'm signed up for the 4500km Trans Europe footrace in 2009; see here

What do you expect your North Pole Marathon time to be?:
6 hours

Can you write well? Explain:
I maintained a blog of my race across France in 2005 - the Transe Gaule. Check it out at http://secker.blogspot.com/.

My story also made the local Austin press; see here.

Tell us about your media experience:
I am race director for an annual Austin event, the Decker Challenge, and am interviewed by local TV news stations in connection with that race. In connection with my "day job", I've been radio interviewed by the BBC, and I speak frequently at conferences, etc.
