Brad Feld and YourRunning are giving away an entry to the North Pole Marathon! Here's who has applied to run.

"Antarctic" Mike Pierce

Encinitas, California
42

Running Experience:
Advanced

Why should we pick you to go to the North Pole?:
When it comes to Polar racing and challenges, there is no one more passionate about the subject than myself. I am a huge fan of polar history and use the stories from Arctic and Antarctic history in my motivational speaking business. This is why I went to Antarctica and raced twice in 2006, completing both the Ice Marathon and the Antarctic 100k. I train for cold weather events in a freezer in San Diego and have done so for almost 2 years now.

The other issue, if not most important, is that I have connections to the media and can represent a sponsor very well. My story of training for and racing in the Antarctic was heard recently all around the world on CNN, ESPN, Fox Central, ABC, CBS, NBC, LA Times, Runner's World and many many other outlets. If you want someone who is very passionate about the Polar subject, who is conditioned to race there and someone who can represent a sponsor/company, etc in the news media I am your person.

"I am a huge fan of polar history and use the stories from Arctic and Antarctic history in my motivational speaking business. This is why I went to Antarctica and raced twice in 2006, completing both the Ice Marathon and the Antarctic 100k."

Offer some evidence that you can complete a marathon in harsh, sub-zero conditions at the North Pole:
In 2006, I ran both the Antarctic Ice Marathon and the Antarctic 100k. I train in a freezer in San Diego and love nothing but cold conditions for racing.

Tell us about your cold-weather race experience:
I lived in Colorado for 10 years and raced and trained in very cold conditions during my time there. I also completed the Antarctic Ice Marathon and Antarctic 100k in 2006.

Tell us about your marathon experience, including times, results, etc.:
I have run a number of marathons and finished my fastest one in 3 hrs and 8 min.

What do you expect your North Pole Marathon time to be?:
6 hrs

Can you write well? Explain:
Blog page is being added to my website that is being rebuilt.

Tell us about your media experience:
My media experience has been very extensive for the past couple of years as I prepared for and raced in Antarctica. My story of training in a commercia freezer has been seen around the world on Fox News Central, ESPN, CNN World Sport, CNN Headline news, ABC World News Tonight, Good Morning America, The CBS Early Show, the LA Times, and many many other news outlets.

I think this is kind of funny. I cited Mike Pierce's freezer training in my application and now he's applied for the race. It certainly seems like there are a lot of really great applicants.
