steve outing says:
I went through a couple pairs of Gel Kayanos, thinking they were the right shoe (based on treadmill test at the Boulder Running Company). Kept getting shin splints when I pushed too hard, though, then finally discovered that they didn't have enough motion control for me. Last time I went shopping I got one of the owners of the store, who figured out that this wasn't the right shoe for me. Now I'm in Brooks S-257. Too bad I didn't get him as my salesperson earlier.
fugie says:
Visiting a store is probably a good idea for me for my next pair of shoes. It's been a long time since I've talked with anyone about the shoe I wear and the type of running I do. We have a local non-chain store. I should stop by and see what they recommend I run in nowadays. The other issue is the Gel Kayano's aren't cheap to be purchasing numerous times throughout the year, though the last two pairs I picked up for a $100 total through EastBay.com and some crazy coupon discount that was floating around the net. Heck, I can't even get one pair for that price today.
steve outing says:
Yeah, what makes the Kayano so expensive? I was pleasantly surprised to find that my new Brooks cost $85 or $90, as I recall.

Good grief! So I am not the only one who takes pictures of his shoes??? What a relief!
Guys, I've had some good use out of Gel Kayanos as well. In my picture you can see the hammering they took on the outside of the sole... check the blue showing through where the black tread has worn off.
The difference in comfort I felt when I finally got a new pair was amazing. It's funny how we/I don't realise how worn down shoes get -- and what a difference it can make to your gait and the impact you feel.
They say Asics Gel Kayanos are one of the most popular running shoes around. Lately I have not been using them so much -- it's almost like I've outgrown the style, or something. My feet and legs feel a LOT better when I rotate shoes as often as possible; so now I try to wear a different type of shoe every day -- that will vary from light road race shoes, to Nike Frees (old style) to Adidas Supernova Cushion etc etc.
At the moment I am marking time with shoes, as Danny Abshire of Active Imprints, the guy who makes orthotics for a lot of elites, has spent ten years developing (and patenting) some new technology that ahs enabled him to build a running shoe that doesn't force you to heel strike, is light, and still gives you adequate protection. Im waiting, waiting, waiting for the first batch to arrive in January! (Danny's website is here.)
