Posted by baselbutt on 4/10/2007 | Groups: North Pole Marathon William Tan from Singapore was the first wheelchair athlete to complete a marathon at the North Pole. William pushed his chair through the ice and snow for 21 hours. He was our inspiration the entire day. I was in the middle of the bike race when he finished, but rode off course to see him finish. | |

Did William do the same course as everyone else? Bobby, I ask because you described the course as requiring snowshoes in some sections, so I wouldn't think it's even possible in a wheelchair. ... In any event, what an inspiration! Congratulations, William!!

Thanks Steve,
William had a special course that basically had him going back and forth on the runway. As you mentioned, it would have been impossible to have done what we did in a wheelchair. That said, the condition of the runway didn't exactly make it easy on him. The (smaller) front wheels of the chair really dug in to the snow covering the ice and made for slow going. If you ever get a chance to meet William, you defintitely need to. He is a fantastic human being.
