The 2007 North Pole Marathon, April 7, Polar Running Adventures

This is a group page for the 2007 North Pole Marathon.

Do you have a great run to share? post it now!
Just another day of runnning in subzero temperatures at the end

The North Pole Marathon -- the world's coolest race. ... On April 7, 2007, 45 athletes competed in Polar Running Adventures' race at the top of the world. Run on the Arctic ice sheet, this is the only marathon run on water.

This section of YourRunning.com is devoted to the North Pole Marathon. Participants in the 2007 race -- as well as past polar marathoners -- are invited to tell their stories, share their photos and videos, and offer advice to this year's racers. And anyone with an interest in polar running also is invited to join in and share their perspectives.

Also see Bobby Bostic's Hot & Cold Running blog.

Frank Stapes - oldest competitor at the 2007 North Pole Marathon

Here's a picture of Frank with about two laps to go. He's in his 70's and has run about 30 marathons to date. Once he gets Africa, he'll have run on all "8" continents (7 real continents + the North Pole).
Frank suffered frost bite on his hand and was wearing an insulated glove when we parted ways at the Oslo airport last night. He's a fantastic spirit who always has a story to tell you.
Sorry for the blur.. I had the camera on the wrong setting.

The Story

The mad dash to the finish of the 2005 New Plymouth (New Zealand) World Cup triathlon.. One of my all time favorite clips.

Getting ready for a hot, sticky next 4+ years...

I know what you're thinking - "back from the dead, are you Bobby?"   Well, please accept my sincere apologies for the lack of "interaction" these past few weeks.   I've had a thing or two on the personal/professional side to deal with that has quite simply consumed my life...   Anyway, I'm back and should have two fairly exciting HOT weather adventures to write about over the next few months..

tri-ing to figure it out :) - 6/9/2007

http://www.slide.com/r/ontWrT0m5j97wZaFsduO12L30GPo5q-V?previous_view=ms... Cruise memorial 5k:Good race today-glad I decided to stick with the 5k this time around. It was very warm out, and I know this course well. Next year, 10 k course :) My time was pretty good, considering I slow down at the hilly end- esp. the one leading to the finish. I was very tempted to walk it, but Gil, Sue and another great chick was there encouraging me! Gil even ran a little of it with me, lol!

The Story

Sean Cornwell and Ed Stumpf were among the runners at the 2007 North Pole Marathon. Perhaps taking a cue from Bobby Bostic (now a veteran of not only the North Pole Marathon but also the Death Valley Ultramarathon), the duo also ran the Sahara Marathon earlier this year. This short video documents the run. I wonder what was more brutal? ... I'm guessing the Sahara race. Sean, who is a senior product marketing manager at Google, also blogged about the 2 races on the Official Google Blog.

Russians must not know about Earth Day...

The last afternoon I went for a walk and found what appeared to be a dumping ground... It was a little disturbing - my guess is that some garbage bags from the plane were strewn all over the place from the jet blast when the plane turned around to take off..

Should I send this one to Pepsi and Coke?

On our way back to Spitsbergen, I helped the cabin steward clean up after the meal service and my prize was a trip in to the cockpit midflight.. Here is a shot of the AN-72 landing at the Pole..

The great thing about a multi-loop marathon is that you get to see everyone at least once..
