I awakened feeling sore and lethargic , but had decided in advance to go for a light warm-up run. It was a breathtakingly beautiful morning , and I started out at a pace that was comfortable , but gradually increased my speed as my legs and lungs dictated. I was floating along at a good clip and barely a hint of pain ; the sixth ( and last ) mile I decided to press it a bit. I was watch-less and haven't a clue what any mile splits were , but ended the run with a great sense of satisfaction.
For fun , still enthused from having watched the T & F championships , I went for an afternoon walk/jog. During this recovery run , I ran into two guys who will be stepping on the track the Friday after next ( 07/06 ) to join me in the Mid-Summer Night's Mile. It's an all-comers meet with 8 heats broken down according to projected times. I will be running in heat 6 , which has a time range of 5:20 to 5:45 per mile. I should say that I've never raced a mile in my life. I'd like to post something under 5:30. It's been 30 years since I've stepped onto a track to compete at any distance , so I'm not sure what to expect. Until I lace 'em up , all my talk of a sub 5 at 50 , remains idle chatter.
I'm thoroughly enjoying the quest. I've lost 40+ pounds over the last 4 years and feel functionally younger than I have in decades. We'll see if I'm singing the same tune when the 6th has come and gone.
Happy trails !!
