Hey Simon,
Well, I try and run a lot and i've been running for years throughout sports and such. However, just recently, i've been tryin to run more and just stay in good shape. Well, my right side has been differing with me a little bit cause it seems to not want to run at all. I get really sharp pains right under my lower rib cage everytime i run, sometimes it gets really bad. It's really annoying cause i'm in shape and could run long distances easily, but for some reason this side stitch is always hurting me. I don't ever have pain when i'm not running so if you could give me any tips to get rid of em or any helpful advice on what it could be that would be awesome! thanks a lot!

The short answer to stitch is to change your breathing pattern. The longer answer is to sort out the muscular imbalances in your core support muscles (including your back) that may be contributing.
The latest research on stitch -- or as "they" are now calling it -- "exercise related transient abdominal pain", is nicely summarised on the About.com sports medicine site here.
The good news is that, whatever the "real" cause, it does go away as you get fitter.

In addition to what Simon says, I have found out that there are a few other things you can do about recurring side stitches. A lot of times you get a side stitch from not hydrating enough before your run. Another thing you might want to try is doing an ab workout before or after your run everyday. This will will do a lot of things. It will make your abs a lot stronger and will stop the pain. Strengthening your core is also a good idea to make your times a lot shorter. I have found that taking deep breaths or stretching my chest helps to get rid of side stitches. I hope I can help.

Hey thanks for the comments regarding side stiches. I have been plagued with this off and on while running and it sucks!! One of my biggest races went down the tubes because I couldn't fight one off. To this day it still occurs every so often but not as frequent. Mostly just an uncomfortable stomach is what doesn't feel good. So any suggestions feel free to comment. thanks

I've also read that exhaling when you're left foot hits the ground helps, b/c side stitch is related to the ligaments that are attached to your diaphram and liver. Liver being on the right side stretches the ligaments causing a chronic stitch. Also, stretching the right side with right arm over head.
