Nike Cesium anyone???

Posted by Mizunogirl on 11/20/2007

I'm considering trying out the womens Nike Cesium2 and I was wondering if anyone has these shoes, or has run in them??

They seem to get mixed reviews.  I'm currently running in Mizuno Alchemy, with the addition of a home made orthotic for my left foot which was pronating wildly...now under control.  The Cesium is supposed to have sort of an orthotic like feel which I think might be better than my own chopped up insole...Any comments????

Not a woman, and not knowing anyone who has tried them, BUT, I predict problems with the Cesium -- it may be better to either wait and see how people find them after a few months. I would also suggest that you go to the store warmed up and when they put you on the treadmill insist on doing a couple of minutes at race or fast training pace to see if they still act like a stability shoe at speed.

My reasoning is this: what Nike seem to have done is to take out all the motion control gizmos from inside the shoe in a worthy attempt to save weight, and have substituted with anti-pronation pads on the outside of the shoe -- on the heels. What this means to my admittedly simple mind is that as you wear down the tread, you will lose the motion control.

In similar simplistic mode, I also wonder what happens to the control when you run at speed, as many people become more forefoot-orientated at speed.

Finally, Mizunogirl, I'm like you -- I have more of a problem on one foot/leg than the other, so I wouldn't really want to be wearing TWO shoes that both act like custom orthotics.

Interesting shoe idea though, isn';t it? Let us know if you try/buy.

I'm pretty sure I will try them.  At this point its the Cesiums or the Mizuno Renegades.  Mizuno seesm to now be catering to fat feeted people by altering their last and making it much wider, which is a problem for me...so I am looking for something a little different...

Luckily I am a total distance runner and I have a more "flat" strike than a forefoot strike, but yes, it seems if I wear down the heels, the shoe would be shot, but in general, once I wear down a heel in anything a shoe for me is shot. Of course I have been running in indestrucible carbon rubber blown mizunos for a long time now, usually in those the uppers disintegrate and I am left with the heel... ;)

I've been considering the Cesiums as well. I've been running in Asic GT-2110's for a couple of years and have been having chronic knee problems. I went to Road Runner Sports and they put me in a neutral shoe. Very disappointed with them by the way. And then I went to Forward Motion and the guy said I pronate severely. I had no idea, I thought I had an average arch. He put me in Brooks Beasts, and I immediately felt the extra weight. I ran twice in them, and then did a marathon, and I didn't have any issues with my joints. But they are still very heavy. The shoe guy said no Nike shoe would offer me enough support, but the Cesiums are different in that they don't try to support the shoe, they modify the heel bed to correct your foot angle. I tried a pair on and they're really quite foreign feeling, but not too bad. I'm betting the negative reviews are from people who won't give it a chance. I don't think wearing down the heels will lesson the orthotic nature, since you're more likely to now strike with the outside of your heel, resulting in more of an angular footbed. Anyways, I may try 'em as a racing shoe. It sounds like you may have hacked your insole away to take material off on the outside? If so, the Cesiums will probably not feel too strange. Buy it from a place that lets you return it used in 30 days and give it a whirl!

I added material to the inside part of my heel to push the heel out sort of....
