5 DAYS IN C.A.

Posted by athletemovie on 5/24/2008

Was good to be back on the West Coast. It's been a few years. Spent the last week in LA and the SF-Bay Area on business. Here are some highlights...

While flying jetting to Burbank on JetBlue, I saw the NYT/Ellen Page event I attended in February on TV. Surreal.

THE (VIRGIN) LONDON MARATHON

Posted by athletemovie on 5/18/2008

Virgin Megastore. Virgin Mobile. Virgin Atlantic. Virgin Cola. Now you can add marathon to that list.

More from The Guardian.

ARE YOU A CYCLIST?

Posted by athletemovie on 5/17/2008

While waiting to get a shot of Lance -- as I huddled with the rest of the media -- at the Ralph Lauren Center on Tuesday, someone behind me asked, "are you a cyclist?" I immediately knew she was referring to the Carmichael Training Systems hat I had on that morning (it reads trainright.com on the back).

G.O.A.T.

While in Harlem to catch Duffy on Monday night, I had what has to be one of the greatest meals of all time.

Sylvia's fried chicken + mac & cheese + collard greens + corn bread.

And let's not forget the sweet potato pie.

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT DUFFY

Posted by athletemovie on 5/13/2008

As a kid growing up, I would stay up late every Saturday night to catch SNL and then Showtime at the Apollo. Tonight I finally got my chance to visit the legendary theatre in Harlem (which is pretty incredible) to catch a legend-in-the-making.

Her name is Duffy and she's a soul singer from Wales, England (not a typo). Think Amy Winehouse but with an even better voice. No need for the Sandman tonight. She tore the roof off of the Apollo.

Another long weekend in the dungeon. Pleased with the overall pace though. Currently at about 11.5 minutes of Artie's segment. Really like what I have so far. But I've run into a bit of an obstacle. Without revealing too much, the challenge involves one of his races. I have hours and hours of footage but the question is how to present it without simplifying the physical effort, the emotion, and the significance associated with that race. And not to mention without relying on the use of bad sports cliches like slow motion or an adrenaline-pumping track to convey all that.

Moby's latest album Last Night is out now. Been listening to it for the past few weeks. Good stuff. Check out the album sampler on MySpace.

From Tokyo to Oakland to NYC. A rare pair of Ato Matsumoto's (made famous by a Mr. West). Thank you Rob.

AIR WALS

Posted by athletemovie on 5/8/2008

Received a pretty funny email the other morning from athlete Carrie's and Kellie's dad Terry (pictured below) about my recent sneaker post.

Dave, just read your blog on "sneaker surprise" and you're right. I came across these "Air Wals", which are only available at select WalMarts (that is any WalMart you select). They, of course, are only worn on special occasions.
