Posted by simon on 1/25/2007 on simon's blog Rochelle Stevens, a member of the US 1,600-meter relay team, who won silver in 1992 and gold in '96, is coming out of retirement to bid for glory at the 2008 games in Beijing. Stevens is now 40, and says: "There are a lot of young women still not running as fast as I used to on a bad day". Martial arts training, forced on her as a way of staying in shape following a torn cartilage that ended her running career in 2000, got her so fit that she made an exercise DVD. And it while filming running sequances, she realised she could still do it. Check out the full story by Ron Higgins here. | |

Rev. Stan Bahn says:
I had the privilege of meeting Miss Rochelle Stevens on a plane from New Orleans to Memphis in 1992, after Rochelle came in first in the 400 m. trials. She was seated next to me on the plane and asked what I was doing. I was preparing a sermon for my son Daryn's ordination as a Lutheran Pastor. The Bible was open to John 15, the story of Jesus as the Vine and we are the branches. Rochelle, whose mother is a minister, said, "Oh, I know that story. My Mom taught it to me in Sunday School." She signed the back of the sermon I was writing and I in turn wrote out a prayer asking for God's blessings upon her efforts in Barcelona. She said she was going to tape it into her raching shoe. I remember her as a remarkable young lady, not only for her racing ability but also for personality, friendliness, and faith. I pray that God will bless her life.
