Wet, Damp, Muddy, and Waterlogged in Boston

Posted by brad on 5/20/2007 on brad's blog

Charles River / Cambridge.  7.12m.  1:16:00.  I’ve been in Boston the past few days and it’s been damp and rainy – endlessly damp and endlessly rainy.  I’ve been tired and couldn’t manage to drag my ass out of bed to run so I’ve been using the rain as an excuse since I didn’t really feel like hopping on a treadmill in a health club anytime soon.  I’d stalled enough and just sucked it up and headed out today.  This is the Boston I hate.  Cars, water, stopped up drains, puddles everywhere.  Yuck.  As I was approaching the Kenmore Square turnoff on Storrow Drive I saw a car lose control and flip all the way over.  Miraculously the guy backed up off the guard rail and then drove away, although I saw an ambulance and police car come screaming by less than five minutes later so he might not have been ok.  I went from Harvard Square to the Longfellow Bridge on the Storrow Drive side and then decided to cut down Main Street and run through Central Square to Boston.  While several people have told me how Central Square has cleaned up and been gentrified, it was the same old trashy place that smelled like Indian food that I remembered.  I was pleased to see 600 Main Street (the empty Polaroid building) still empty (I think it’s been like 20 years), 875 Main Street (my first office), and 675 Mass Ave (Harmonix’s office and the original home of the Cambridge Business Development Center.)  The puddles, traffic, and oblivious people on the sidewalk were as I remember them.  I’m warm finally, back in my hotel room, sipping a large Dunkin Donuts coffee (which is much better than I remember it to be.)
