turning a failed run into a positive tempo run

Posted by trunner on 6/4/2007 on trunner's blog

Today, my first run of this week was suppose to be a 6 mile run, or at least that was what it started out to be. I had everything figured in my head as to what route I was going to run. How I would pace my runs at certain areas of the course. Everything was going just fine despite the humidity until about 1.8 miles into the run. At this point, there cars coming one by one, the humidity was getting bad, and I had to stop and wipe my face every couple of minutes. I had slightly over 4 more miles to go dealing with this stuff. Well, it wasn't getting better, just worse. So I compromised and turned my long run into a tempo run and turned around and headed back. I was starting back up a slow incline and let me tell you that I could not believe my legs. I was moving and it was up hill! I stopped now and then because of cars and heat, but, wow was I moving when running! I was pushing myself up hill at full power and not having a lot of problems doing it. Had I originally planned a negative split for my run, I would have finished with a grin on my face - he he. I must confess when I turned around to do the tempo, I was very mad at the cars and humidity. I felt like exploding. But, instead I rolled with it and made a good run out of a bad run.

Stats:

Run start time: 1:27:30
Run End time: 2:11:38
Total time: 45.08
Miles: 3.7
Pace: 11.86/mile
Planned run 6 miles endurance
Actual run 3.7 tempo run

While I didn't get the run I wanted, I won't complain on what I experienced on the return trip. It sure surprised me, though it's a shame the total time couldn't have been better, but hey! I have decided to plan my 6 miler for Tuesday morning (I hope).

As someone from Miami, I so totally understand your frustration with the humidity. I could never start my run after 7am because of it. I also used to drive the route ahead of time to put extra water bottles out(for me and my dog). Keep it up. Your doing great!

Thanks littlemamalopez, I was so dissapointed, but I persevered and made a good run out of it anyway. Also, we have friends in Florida that would love for us to move down, but, if the humidity is that bad, well, hmmmmm, I don't know..........
