Transformation in the making!

Posted by njladybug on 1/25/2008 on njladybug's blog

I have been thinking about my running goals over the past couple days. This really is a change for me - big time. To go from a casual exerciser to becoming a runner is a transformation that has me contemplating as I do this. Sometimes I think to myself that I’m not really going to accomplish this - what makes me think I’m going to keep running? Then I quiet those funny little voices and think that there is no reason for me not to accomplish this. I can become a runner and I will get lots of benefits from it. As I drive around I see runners out there who look like they’ve been doing it their whole life. And I watch my gym instructors who also look like they’ve been at it their whole lives. And my thoughts go to how easily they can move their bodies. They seem to do as well as a child on the playground. I can’t. My body won’t move like that. It’s had several years of not being pushed to move like that. To run, to stretch, to move about with ease. But I really want to be able to do those things. And that motivates me to continue. That coupled with the realization that as I am continuing on I am getting better. My body is moving more quickly and I can see myself more freely moving and running.
I went out for a run this morning and as I thought about these things I realized that I am getting closer to those goals and I AM going to make it if I keep it up. On the last leg back I thought “You know! I AM going to be able to wear that cute little swimsuit that’s hanging in my closet! I can get there! I can see that goal peeking over the horizon! I can just feel it!” So, I’m excited! I have to keep pushing! January is almost done and it’s been reasonably successful. I have to make February a great month and so on and before I know it I’ll be there, running with the wind in my face and fascinated by how well my body can move!

Very cool goal! You can see it and feel it, and you can feel the transformation happening. You know, if you could talk to some of those runners you see out there, you will find many a story of people who have come back from injury or emotional trauma, people who have started running because their health was so bad they were going to die young if they didn't do something...and plenty of runners who have started late in life. It really doesn't take long to get the look of ease...it just takes CONSISTENT effort and the will to do it. Thanks for sharing your inspiring story; keep on keeping on and it will keep coming to you.
