Those top ten tunes to run to... Queen, Springsteen, Kanye West, Stones....

Posted by simon on 4/15/2008 on simon's blog

When it comes to music, I'm starting to sound like my father. Inevitable of course, that eventually I should catch myself shouting "Call that music?" almost every time I turn on the car radio. Of course, he was ranting about the Beatles, while I (usually) am ranting at rap, but the principle's the same.

But hey, it's not just me. The Play.com poll of Ipod users taken before the London marathon to find out what people were listening to while preparing and racing put two Queen tracks, Springsteen and the Stones in the top ten, backed by the theme from Rocky and "Eye of the Tiger".

As it happens, I really like Black Eyed Peas, but "Let's get it started" is one of my LEAST favourites. Others in the Top Ten are Kanye West's spin on Nietschze, "Stronger", "Don't Cha" by Pussy Cat Dolls and "Right Here Right Now" by Fat Boy Slim.

Findings from the poll also supported the London Marathon's decision NOT to ban Ipods and other music players during the race. 75% of those asked said not being able to run to music would affect their performance.

London race director Dave Bedford told the Observer newspaper: “It's a rule that will not be picked up in this country. It is completely unenforceable.” The Gizmodo UK website summed up the British attitude to music on the run with the comment, "In the US, the USA Track & Field governing body has banned the use of iPods, and any other music players, claiming that they are a distraction and a threat to runner safety. It’s a load of b------s really but then this is the type of irony you can expect from a nation that bans iPods from marathon runners but where everyone watching can be armed."
