This morning's 6 mile run aborted

Posted by trunner on 7/11/2007 on trunner's blog | Groups: Lets Run

Well, this morning, I knew it was going to be a humid day. So, I got up at 5:15am EST and was on the road by 5:30am EST. It was so humid, that I couldn't even get into high gear. I could only do a easy slow pace. I kept going until I got about (guessing) a mile and a half out. At this point I stopped and cleared my eyes from the sweat. It was at this point that I realized that I could not complete my six mile run. I turned back and headed home. I ran when I could. Total time: 20:51 for 2 plus miles. I am not worried about the distance. The 10k race is just days away (This Sunday morning). I know I can do the distance. I'm just concerned about the time. I do worse with 10k's then I do with 5k's since I don't do them that often. However, I'm keeping a positive attitude and am very much looking forward to the race. I probably won't have pictures for this race since the digital camera I was using belonged to one of our foster kids who recently went home. The next two days (Thursday & Friday, I am going to concentrate on speed and hill work as best as I can. If it's not to disgusting out tonight, I may venture out again and run. Oh, and by the way, I just discovered that I lost more weight. I am at my goal weight for this race -- 180.00 -- yes! i should probably loose a few more by then I hope. This 10k is very important to me this year, since it will kind of be like a launch pad for me to prepare my training for a half marathon. I hope to do one in the fall? For the half that I plan on doing, I have to decide by mid august if I am doing it or not in order to preregister. Well, here's to Sunday!

Good going; you score bonus points for listening to your body ... and congratulations on hitting your goal weight.

Take it easy on Friday -- I mean don't smash yourself up with a hard hill session or speed work - focus on staying fresh for Sunday.

Thanks Simon! So, are you saying that I should not run at all on Friday? I was going to NOT run on Saturday.

You are fine to run Friday if you want to; I was just worried that you would try to cram in another two hard sessions and that, bearing in mind it can take 48 hours to recover from a tough workour, you might damage your chances for Sunday.

I don't want to interfere with your normal routine, but if I was racing Sunday I WOULD take Friday as my rest day, then on Saturday do some light strides and pre-race drills. That's because sometimes I find a rest day kind of puts my legs to sleep. If the race is in the afternoon you can get round this by waking them up with a light jog and strides in the morning, but races are usually early in the morning and then I find I have to do a LONG warm-up or my legs still feel dead. But that's just me.... :)

Gotcha Simon, Thanks! I see what you mean. I will take Friday off, but, Saturday, not sure how that will go time-wise.
