Posted by yoherb on 7/22/2007 on yoherb's blog OK, tomorrow is the official start of my 10 week build up to the Boulder Backroads 1/2 Marathon. I've never run a 1/2, only full. So, I'm obviously not worried about the distance, but I know that going faster can be hard. I'm going to follow a 3 day/week running program. It's called FIRST (don't remember why) and comes off the Runner's World web site: I'm targeting 1:55, and plan to run it with my friend Brad Feld. I'll probably do some of my speed workouts with my training partner Erica (now the Head Cross Country Coach for Centarus - congrats). The reason I'm doing 3 days is that this leaves me 2 days for lifting. I'm working to get some weight off (what's new). I've written about this before. It's not so much that I want to be thinner, it's that I want to run my whole life and I know that being 10 lbs lighter would significantly extend my running career. I'll probably run at least one more day a week - hopefully with some people from work (Me.dium). Looking forward to building up to another race. I plan to track my progress on this blog. I'm sure the world will be watching. If there are others out there that want to do a weekend training run for the 1/2, let me know. My target pace for the half will be around 9 min/miles. | |

Let's rock dude. Where are you going to lift - we should do it together.

yoherb,
I too am basing my training slightly on the FIRST program.
However I must warn you that they stress basically doing 3 quality sessions a week.
I have struggled to maintain the paces they defined based on my most recent 5k time.
For you looks like about 8:42min/mile pace to achieve a finish time of 1:53:38(HMP)
Then your speedwork sessions are
Speedwork Times:
400s--HMP, minus 75 seconds, divided by 4 = 7m27smin/mile = 1m52 per 400m
800s--HMP, minus 65 seconds, divided by 2 = etc....
1600s--HMP, minus 45 seconds
So that looks pretty smoky rep times to me.
Just make sure you are really well recovered between runs.
Regards
Nev
