Running in the rain

Posted by trunner on 1/16/2007 on trunner's blog

Hello, this is my first post on this site...

I've been running for quite a few years now and I usually try to avoid running in the rain. I'm from Pennsylvania and of late, I've been considering running in the rain, so I can get a run in instead of being stranded indoors on the treadmill. I'd like to know what others think about running in the rain. Coincidently, I saw someone running in the slow rain this evening just a few blocks away from where I live. One thing I won't do is run in hard rain unless I'm caught in it. I'd like to know what others think on this subject. -- Thanks

You don'r run if it is raining?!?!?!?!?!!?

Good grief, Britain would have no runners at all if we had followed that rule :)

Just go for it; it won't kill you and it can even be refreshing and pleasant if you dress for the conditions.

Welcome to the site!

I'm scheduled to run 14 miles today and it's pouring! Typical Portland, Oregon weather for this time of year. It's supposed to rain all day too so it's no use for me to wait for it to subside. I'm running laps around the place I work so I've brought a change of clothes and I can also jump on a treadmill if I want to. I'm at my desk right now gathering up the fortitude to just got out there and get started.

Why not warm up on the treadmill, Kay, then you'll be good to go and won't feel the cold from the rain so much?

I remember one run home from work in London with a colleague. We had to decide whether to keep loads of clothes on to try to stave off the inevitable, or whether to just accept we were going to get totally wet and strip down to shorts and just go for it.

We opted to strip down, but as it was a bit cold I wanted to pu something on my legs -- we didn't have any massage cream, so in desperation I used soap from the office shower. Halfway up Oxford Street my legs started FOAMING...it all added to the 'crazed runner' look :)

For me, running in the rain is a lot like running in any other condition - it's the first 4 or 5 minutes that are the hardest. Once in a good rhythm it's no big deal.

The only other (obvious) thing I should mention is that dressing appropriately is extremely important. While I don't mind running in the rain, I hate being soaked to the bone.. Same thing goes for the cold.. Don't mind running IN the cold, but I do mind being COLD...

I just read some of the new comments to my post about running in the rain. I must say, that I am more motivated to running in the rain than I've ever use to be. I agree with statement made about being cold, I don't like to be cold either. One thing that does delay me from running outside is when there is ICE everywhere. I broke my nose once, I wish not to do that again. Thanks Tim

I'm new to Pennsylvania (from Texas) and have no idea how to dress for the rain. What does "dressing appropriately" for the rain look like? What should I wear/buy so that I'm not miserable?

Hi Parkerman, sorry that it took me a while to respond. I'd say it depends upon the temperature. When I run in the rain, if it is spring or summer, I don't wear anything special except maybe a baseball type hat (if I have my glasses on). After all, when you run, you sweat, so your gonna get wet anyway. Now, as it gets colder, I dress accordingly. In the Winter, I wear men's running tights and a jacket. A good site to see for running apparel is: http://www.roadrunnersports.com You'll find ANYTHING you could possibly need here.

Hope this helps, post anytime!

Tim
