Running for Charity

Posted by agoyette on 4/26/2007 on agoyette's blog

I am a pretty novice runner who has signed on with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to run in the Marine Corp Marathon in October. A pretty daunting task plus I need to raise $2,800 at least for the charity. My goal is actually to reach over $5,000. I thought your running would be a great spot to post about being a first time marathoner and the trials of training for anyone who might be interested. I also thought it would be a great way to spread the "word". For more information on the charity and how to donate please click here: http://www.active.com/donate/tntepa/agoyette

So I plan on doing my first run tonight (test out my stamina) and will go from there. Also I would love any tips any has to offer in regards to fundraising or actually running a marathon.

Thanks,
Adam

Hey there!

I did TNT about 6 or 7 years ago.. It's a fantastic program. You are guaranteed to have a wonderful first marathon experience if you do everything they tell you to do.. : )

On the fundraising side - what sort of company do you work for? Co-workers are always good for some money.. Especially co-workers higher up the food chain. Also, if you have access to any sort of matching gift program (most big corporations have one), it's an easy way to multiply the money you raise.

Remember, it's really easy to get $1-$5 from a lot of people, it's also easy to get $1,000 from someone who can afford it.. The tougher nuts to crack are those who would give between $50 and $100.. Usually they require extra hand holding.. I try to focus on the big fish and the small fish because you don't need to put forth a lot of effort to get donations from them..

$5,000 for running 26.2 miles = roughly 27 feet per dollar.. If you go around asking people to buy 25 feet of your marathon for $1.00, I'm sure people will buy 100 feet, 200 feet.. Get people involved in helping you reach your goal and they'll be more generous than if you ask for $20 and then disappear..

I've raised over $500k for a foundation I'm involved with so if you need any help, let me know.

All the best,
Bobby
