Only .31 Miles

Posted by littlemamalopez on 4/19/2007 on littlemamalopez's blog

I have a new training partner. The Forerunner 101. We went out for our inaugural run this morning and it is brilliant. He (yes, Forerunner 101 is a "he") tells me just what I want to know, pace, distance, averages. Not too many bells and whistles. He is the best partner ever! Or is he?

He also happens to be brutally honest. It turns out that my "5 mile, end at Starbucks reward loop" is in actuality 4.69 miles. Ouch! 4.69 miles? How can that be? I obviously have deceived myself. I have exagerated miles in my log book, misled family and friends, as well as misinformed readers of my stats on my blog (which, incidentally, I throughly enjoying writing). As I explained my vexation to my carpool this morning, one girl stated "It's only .31 miles". Only .31 miles? I should know better than to confide in a non-runner. Anyone who has passed mile 26 in a marathon knows those last .2 miles seem like an eternity. You know it's true! So, all in all, I will add the .31 miles on tomorrow.

On a more positive development, he (Forerunner 101) informed me that my average pace was 9:38. 9:38? Really? Me? SWEET! He is the best partner ever. I'm in love :)

Miles 4.69
Time 47:15
Avg Pace 9:38
Best Pace 6:58 (on a sweet downhill)

Sweet!

I wish you many happy miles together.

And I am glad I am not the only one; when my wife sees my training diary on the kitchen table she is always asking me why I have daily totals like 5.2 or 6.4 and so on... and weekly totals that end in .5, .75 and so on. Why? I can't explain why -- it's what I ran, that's all.
