Posted by Grace W. on 10/19/2007 on Grace W.'s blogThat same left ankle again...twisted it last Saturday on a trial run. With the Grand Rapids Marathon coming up in a week and a half, this was not good timing. This was the first time running on a trail since last May when I sprained my ankle at Ice Age in Wisconsin. This trail is no where near as rocky as Ice Age, but the trail was covered with leaves so I couldn't really see where I was stepping. I rolled my ankle on a rock or pine cone. My ankle must really be weak because I didn't roll it that bad, but it really hurts! I've taken time off since it happened and will re-evaluate whether I'll even run in the marathon after I see how it feels this weekend. My hopes of PRing in GR is not looking good. I'm continuing to do strength training to develop upper body strength, and cross-training by using the stationary bike and the elliptical. Hopefully I won't lose too much.

:( My doctor always tells me to see him in a week if it doesn't get better. It pisses me off when he does it, but oddly, in a week I'm usually feeling better. Hope it'sthe same for you.

I had a spate of ankl;e-turning recently. Sometimes it happens because if you run on the road (or relatively hard, smooth trails), the proprioceptors in the ankle switch off.
Mark Plaatjes has had me doing exercises to switch 'em back on... stand on one leg and balance. When you can do that easily, close your eyes. Try it -- you'll feel your ankels working like crazy to stabilise you. This also helps shift all the fluid and other gunk you ned to get out of there after a sprain.
Hope you mend real quick. GR Marathon is on nice smooth ROADS n'est ce pas? You'll be fine.

Thanks for your comments! My ankle feels so much better after my yoga class. It's probably because of all the gunk getting cleansed out. I haven't yet run since the sprain, but I'm planning on doing GR anyway.
