Not fast enough?

Posted by simon on 4/25/2007 on simon's blog

These comments from Kyle, one of my fellow Sub-5 Milers, cracked me up. Bobby McGee's training is working a treat on Kyle. I don't want to embarrass him, but I believe it's true to say he's never run so fast in his life...and bear in mind our goal races start in August and it's only April...so I got an email report of his road`race in Greeley on Sunday, in which he's disappointed to come in second overall (he's over 50, remember) averaging near enough 5:30 pace for the two miles.

This is what he said (quoted with permisson):

"Finished 2nd overall in a time of 11:17. The winning time was 11:04. I was
disappointed in the time. I thought I should have been able to run a 11:00 or better. This a new race distance and new course for the race venue so I have nothing to compare the time to. It was a hilly looped course with about 1200 meters of the first mile uphill. My mile splits were 5:42/5:35. On the bright side I was 6th with about 1000 meters to go and finished strong to move up to 2nd. The times right behind me were 11:22 and 11:25.
The guy who won was age 26 and the 2 guys right after me were 24 and 32 so that made me feel good that I was stronger than the younger guys over the last 1000. In speaking with them after the race they were surprised at the slow times. They said they thought we hammered the course. I concentrated on my form and using my arms correctly during the race. I feel good and strong today. No soreness or tightness whatsoever."

How can he be dissappointed with that? Beating all those kids and all? 11:17 on a hilly course!! I guess it shows how we have raised our standards after a scant 5-6 months of Bobby's regime. I'm dreaming of the world Masters championships in Italy in September, for instance -- and I haven't even got under 19 minutes for a 5k this year yet!

I also had to laugh at Kyle's impatience to be going fast, fast, fast right NOW. I share that impatience!
