Posted by baselbutt on 6/28/2007 on baselbutt's blog Hi all - A good friend left a message on my machine today wondering if I was OK.. Well - let me dispell a few of the nastier rumors: - I did NOT fall off a cliff while pacing my friend Steve at the Western States and break every bone in my body... - I did NOT get mauled by a mountain lion while pacing my friend Steve at Western States and lose half my blood volume... - I actually did NOT even make it to Western States... After leaving my son's 6 1/2 birthday party in Berkeley (he's a Christmas birthday boy, so we do a half birthday with his friends on June 23rd) I headed off for Auburn to meet up with his wife and brother.. About 20 miles from Auburn my cell phone rings - "Hey Bobby" - I replied "Hey! - who is this?" - [the response] "This is Steve" (the guy I was supposed to be pacing in a few hours time).. As it turns out, Steve's IT band acted up early on and he wasn't able to shake it so he dropped at mile 30... Hallaluja! The running gods were smiling on me this fine day (I said quietly to myself).. While on the phone, I exited the freeway and did a 180 back to Oakland.. OK - so why the emergency room??? I'll cut to the chase... When I got home, my son and I rode our bikes up to the Piedmont High track to try out this really COOL air-powered airplane he got from one of the kids at his party. On the way back home, we were at the bottom of a hill he and I have riden on a few dozen times when I heard SMASH - followed by silence - followed by a cry no daddy wants to hear... He was about 6 feet behind me when it happened, so I didn't see what went wrong, but basically he landed on his face and was banged up pretty bad.. Luckily he had a helmet on - the unlucky part was that he now has road rash on both legs, his face, both arms and his left shoulder.. We went to the emergency room for fear that he might have broken a bone in his face - luckily for us all, the damage was (and still is) purely cosmetic. I've been home from work with him for the past week, so for those of you who called my office only to hear that I am "working from home" - rest assured, I was truly "working from home". The great news is that today we went out and bought him a new helmet and he was out riding his bike again; road rash and all. Sorry for the scare!!!!!!!!!! Bobby | |

Hi Bobby - just got back from my latest race (recap to come), so I missed the kerfuffle, but am very happy to hear that your son is okay! I'm sorry, though, to hear that Steve had to postpone his Battle for the Buckle!
