Posted by weltal327 on 11/26/2007 on weltal327's blog During the time at home for Thanksgiving, I was able to share some time with my family and my friends and one of my favorite things to brag on myself about was my marathon, though I don't go out of my way to bring it up or anything, but I don't mind talking about it, because I think each and every one of my family and friends could do the same thing. As I shared the tale of horror and pain that left me walking the last 9 miles, the common question among my friends and family was "why didn't you quit?" or the similar statement "I woulda quit... actually I wouldn't've run the race at all." My answer to any of those things was simply... I couldn't quit. I have found a few Vince Lombardi quotes that I think every runner will understand, and certainly apply to my finishing this race. "The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender." "It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up." "Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit." - Something I personally had to break to become the runner I am today. "Fatigue makes cowards of us all." "The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will." "Dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you're willing to pay the price." I know that's a lot of quotes that sound pretty similar, but maybe you can memorize one and use it to help pick up another runner at a race. I think I might make some posters with these on them to help support runners at local races. I'm amazed that one person has all of these great quotes about hard work and dedication, but I got all of these from http://thinkexist.com/quotation/fatigue_makes_cowards_of_us_all/149882.h... Which also labels Vince Lombardi as the "national symbol of single-minded determination to win" "If you can accept losing you can't win. If you can walk you can run. No one is ever hurt. Hurt is in your mind." | |

Love the quotes. My favorite quote is "Do or do not, there is no try." From the galaxy's greatest philosopher - Yoda. :)

Hey Robert! Great quotes!
I really like "The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender." It's so true! When I got hurt the only reason I didn't quit was because I had worked too hard for it. At that point I didn't care about the accomplishment of actually finishing a marathon - I just didn't want to quit because I worked too hard for it. I didn't spend all year training just to give up.
I hope you get back to running soon!
