DNR No. 2

Posted by littlemamalopez on 5/19/2007 on littlemamalopez's blog

I don't know how a DNF (did not finish) feels like. But my second DNR (did not run) happened today because of my knee. Yes, I did not run the Palos Verdes 1/2; the 1/2 that I was so looking forward to because of the beautiful course, weather, my friend how was going to run it with me, and oh yeah - the much hoped for PR. I contemplated going to the race to volunteer, but then remembered the parking situation, and the steep downhill to the start/finish area, and I knew my knee counldn't handle that.

Everyone knows that hindsight is 20/20, so looking back, here is the is the clear synopsis of my downfall. On Wednesday night I took the kids (including Mike, my husband) rock climbing at a fantastic little gym here in Redondo called "Beach City Rocks." All was well, until I was "bouldering" a little too high and dropped down to the floor. Immediately I felt a pulled muscle in my right quad, but wasn't all too concerned about that. Then yesterday my left knee started acting up. Now generally speaking, I always have a slight ache under my knee cap (I know I need to stretch more and strengthen the quads and when I do both of those things, the slight ache goes away). Back to the story - So when I got to work, I called Mike to bring me a knee brace during lunch, just as a back-up - I still wasn't too concerned. But before lunch, I walked up the front steps to a building and OUCH! Searing sharp pain under my knee cap. It stopped me in my tracks for several seconds. Then the limping started. And it was all downhill from there. Mike came at lunch with the brace, and it helped. Simon suggested that I ice it immediately but as I still had 6 hours of work left, that wasn't possible. He also said that the knee was probably tracking wrong due to the drop from the boulder on Wednesday night. I'm in full agreement with that diagnosis. So I've been iceing, and stretching last night and today. I no longer have searing pain, but it is more than a dull ache. I am extremely bummed about the DNR today. I am also bummed that I can't rock climb with the family either, watching is soooooo boring! So I am now off to get myself that much needed (and deserved) pedicure. The self pity of today's DNR stops here!

Run for me today :)

I'm so sorry about your knee! I haven't had to do it yet, but the decision not to run must be as hard, if not harder, than the decision to run. I keep a gel pack in the freezer at work to use on my knees after a hard morning run. Is that an option for you?

Good luck - rest well!

Thanks for all the advice. Gel packs in the freezer at work will be on my to do list.
