A rain runner is born

Posted by trunner on 5/16/2007 on trunner's blog

Before I get into today's run, I should first go over the event that lead to the outcome of today. Yesterday, (Tuesday 5/15/07), I was getting ready to run 5 miles and I was just about dressed to run except for my socks and sneakers. Then just as I was about ready to finish and leave the phone rings. It was the school calling about one of our Foster kids needing to come home since he was sick. Well, there goes the run. So, my five miles went by by's. So, now, today, after a morning full of business to deal with, I decided that I am going to run today. But, it's raining!!! Well, for those of you who have read my previous posts, you know my situation here. So, I ask you, did I run or did I chicken out? You know, I could stop right here and come back in a few days to see if anyone leaves any replies as to what was thought if I ran or not, but, I won't do that to any of ya. That was just to be funny. Well, yes, I ran 2 miles in rain. I didn't do 5 today since, I wasn't sure how the rain would be all day. The first quarter of the run was a slow sprinkle/drizzle combo. Then up until the last quarter of the run, the rain slowed more to just a drop here an there. Then during the last quarter, the rain increased. After the finishing the run, I realized that I made only one mistake. I should not have wore my glasses. I'm not a car with windshield wipers. I can say that I actually enjoyed the run. My time was 21:38 for 2 miles. I'm not complaining. Soon after I got home, my wife called and I told her that I ran in the rain, and she asked you mean in the pouring down rain ? I said NO, it wasn't pouring here. She was surprised. My water wings are not broke in - he he. I know to some of you my blog seems to be about running in the rain, well, it's just that it was a good subject to start with, there will be other stuff on running. Y'all have a good run now, ya here!

Tim -- you ran in the rain! You don't have to apologise to us for writing about it :) It helps the rest of us get out there. Yes, I admit it, I have "no fear" of rain but sometimes I do just hang out and wait to see if it will stop.

Thanks Simon, I do agree! Well, this just has been a new and interesting subject.

I got baptized last week, too. I've been re-habbing a house and so haven't been very consistent with my running. Last week I forced myself on Monday. There were a number of unusual components to the run. I had just given myself a mohawk (for a punk rock party!) and running "wingless" felt odd. Second, my body ached from painting and scraping and packing and unpacking. Third, it looked like rain.

I ran the trail between South Boulder Road and Marshall from my house near Baseline. I programmed my ipod for four miles. My endorphin rush seems to come right at about 1.5 miles. I've come to expect it. As an overall positive sensation, it just about rivals a hot shower on a late-morning, hangover shower. About 100 yards after the rush came the rain! The setting sun lit up the field, the cows clustered in the corner, my mohawk got soaked, and I had a shit-eating grin on my face for a few days.

I enjoyed your story, but, I don't think that I am brave enough to get a mohawk. Maybe if I was 20 years younger. How far did you run anyway? Thanks

Mark Phillips says:

I ran 5 or 6 miles that day.

Thanks Mark, I'm getting back to being able to run that far again after a bit of a break. Thanks for visiting!

It's interesting hearing from someone who lives in a drier climate. Out here you either run inside or run in the rain! It's sounds like you had a good time. For the glasses, just wear a ball cap. It keeps most of the rain off the lenses. There have been times when I could barely see, but that's not the norm. Oh, and tight shorts work best in the rain. I've had days when I thought my pants were so heavy they weren't going to stay up any more.

Thanks for the advice Rob! I don't even know if I want to imagine running with wet heavy pants. I bet that wasn't fun - thanks again!
